    Not until 2018.

I feel sorry for some but why leave getting a new passport until the last minute?

Mr. Pooch was flying to England with Ryanair and assumed driving licence would do, as it often has but only read the fine print week and a half before flight, hence big mad dash to passport office. Thank Christ it wasn't now! Fúckin Ryanair!!

Already been through my husbands situation in the travel forum, long story short, passport pages full, still 6 years on it, he's based in the middle east, travels to places which need a full page for visa, needs passport for travel at least twice a month, takes 4-6weeks for application through Saudi, that was before the current action, he cant be without a passport for that long or he cant work, doesnt get paid, and we go hungry and end up homeless, only option was present in person for emergency passport, he flew home for 24hrs, 1000euro, got told to pretty much p*ss off at the passport office cos no one died.....he said, Not yet they havent! :D

So no, he didnt leave it til the last minute, and doesnt have a second passport for just this kind of eventuality.

I am living in Canada at the moment and I got my passport renewed last year. I sent it to the embassy in Ottawa and it came back in less than a week. Gotta love those diplomatic pouches!

Renewed mine a few weeks ago. Don't need to be back in the passport office until 2020.

2017 for me lots of time to sort out the wages of the folks in the passport office yet :D

Really Don't understand why people leave it to the last minute and it is kind of annoying too see them on the news giving out about how everything is so disgraceful.
I do sympathize with those out there that cannot go long without a passport for a long time and those who have genuine reason for getting it late e.g. the guy who spends alot of time in the far east but not everyone has reasons like that and there are those out there who know they are going on holidays in two weeks and think "ah its so much hassle getting a passport, il do it next week, sure there is an express service". Serves SOME of them right I say.

Its a very important personal document things like that shouldn't be left to chance.

    don't know.
it was stolen 2 weeks ago.

just as well i'm not supposed to be flying anywhere this weekend and the passport office aren't a bunch of lazy *****, and only giving emergency passports to people who've to travel for a family death....

Left 17 working days to get my passport as i was traveling to england 2 weeks ago, long story short the assholes at the passport office diddnt process it in time so i had to get the bus and ferry over. But they kindly informed me while i was on the bus to rosslare that i could collect my passport the next day,
My original flight was at 6am the next morning so that was still no use to me, i hope i never have to get the bus and ferry to england again it took 20 hours to get were i needed. Plus on the ferry on the way over a group of pikeys decided to have a bar brawl mid transit battering each other.

Just got a new one in December, so I'm good for almost ten years.
The last one broke, from keeping it my back pocket so much, the two ends of the plastic card broke and then I was booking into a hotel in Austria in April and the receptionist snapped the whole thing off, so I had it stuck together with sellotape for 7/8 months and I'd just tell immigration officers it happened the day before, fixing it next week, whenever one of them happened to spot it.
They don't make 'em like they used to.

Ha I'll pass on the message!:p

It is a bit ridiculous though, I mean I'm all for workers rights and honoring wage agreements etc. but when its affecting this many people from leaving the country something really has to be done...

Seriously though if your bro can't get one you might be able to get it in the Cork passport office on the South Mall. It is a disaster we have not got a National ID card for these types of situations. Alot of the Eastern Europeans travel on their ID cards instead of passports and within schengen you can travel without any papers, except for the usual photo-id for flights but they are for airline security and not immigration reasons.

Don't think the Cork route would work tbh, they already have his old passport and long birth cert in Balbriggan and he needs those to reapply.

He was in the passport office on Friday and again this morning, was told it should be posted out during the day. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow, if not hes going to have to get an emergency one from the dept. of foreign affairs.

It's ridiculous, it was sent in on the 1st of this month with passport express, god help the people that sent it in the regular service...

Regardless I think a national ID would be a good idea.

Off topic, does anyone know is photo ID necessary to travel from here to the UK? Would an expired passport do the job?

Bout 10 years ago I think. Luckily my agoraphobia saves me money on a passport.

    May 2012. I'm just pleasantly surprised that I haven't lost/destroyed it in 9 years.

Not absolutely necessary, but Airlines insist on it. Aer Lingus will accept Driver's License.

    Yes it would.

British and Irish citizens don't need to carry a passport when travelling between both states, so long as you can satisfy an immigration officer, if required, that you are indeed a British or Irish citizen.
