As regards Andrew Bird, I was given his entire discography and found 'Fingerlings 3', a compilation of some of his live recordings, a good place to start. The Fingerlings records are harder to track down though, so failing that maybe start with 'Noble Beast' and work your way back!
Some of his Bowl of Fire stuff from the nineties is really, really excellent. Much more jazz-orientated that what he's doing now. 'Oh! The Grandeur' is probably my favourite out of the Bowl of Fire albums...
But really, you could recommend any of his albums, he's that good
