Dawes Karakum Tourer - where to buy in Ireland, opinions?

    I like the look of the Karakum, the handlebars really appeal as i find the drops on my old Horizon are giving me pains in the elbows and wrists (too narrow grip) on long spins, maybe I'm just getting old.

    So being generally happy with Dawes i had a look online and the Karakum seems to tick all the right boxes for me

    Anyone know of a shop in Dublin/Wicklow that might stock this or can order it in for me so I can buy it under the Bike To Work scheme?

    Anyone have any comments on this tourer?, any big no-no's or recommendations for another tourer (without drops) that might be better in the same price range?

    If narrownesss is the primary problem would it not be worth trying wider drops before an entirely new bike?

    Most road bars tend to be quite narrow but you can get ones just a bit wider than what you have now or alternately crazy wide ones - at 600mm those are as wide as any MTB bar.

    There would be other options for changing the position/bars on your current bike without shelling out for an entirely new one.

    I agree Blorg, in fact I asked my local bike shop to see if they could get the Karakum bars for my bike (they are checking it out for me)...but i kinda fancy a new shiny bike....

    They are called "butterfly bars" if you want to do some more research on them.

    How do you find the drops now? If you use them at all you would lose that position- or to an extent with these bars you are raising that whole position upward.

    Butterfly are sometimes used on touring bikes simply as there is no drop option that works with a geared hub. So with a bike to be taken into extreme conditions you need to match the bars to your gearing system.

    Point is just that if width is your problem butterfly may not be the best solution. If you never use your drops it may be- although if you never use your drops you should probably try raising your bars first.
