Mine was fine last night in Maynooth, downloaded two games from steam and was playing TF2 most of the night.

Still having ping spikes but was getting constant 900KB/s on downloads.

Hoping they stabilise that ping. It will be awesome service if they can.

I'm really annoyed now. Where abouts are you in Maynooth? I'm in Kingsbury and it's very inconsistent. Did you have to tweak any settings on the modem? Going to ring them if things don't improve.

I'm in Kingsbry too, just got it installed 2 days ago so maybe something has changed, I'd say ring them.

Will do. I'll see how it is tonight. If you are online can you do a speed test at around 9 tonight and post so I can compare. Im going to give the outdoor antenna a reboot. This may sort it.

If I'm online, no problem, should be online I think.

I wouldn't be the most technical of people so can you explain further?? If this fix would improve my speeds I'd like to give it a go.

    Cheers.

    Hi

Just turn off the power to your outside aerial, wait a minute and turn it on again. I'd reboot too but I don't know if you have to.

Did you look at tweaking your TCP/IP settings? That made a big difference for me (windows XP) I'll try and post some readings tonight. I use http://www.irishisptest.com/runmyspeed.php

Thanks for the help guys. I'll give all that a go tonight. As I said before I was happy enough getting between 4 - 5 mbps. Hopefully I can get it working or else I'll be asking for an techie to call out from imagine.

The speeds seem good for you, have you got an internal box or external antenna?

The pings are still very bad though.

I have external box anyway, they said we'd have to get it so guess other person has same if in same estate.

The ping times are very irregular which is the worst thing about it. Playing TF2, it constantly pings server and I can display it on the hud and its all over the place.

minimum for a game I got is 80ms max 300ms and its usually between 120 with spikes about every minute to 170ms.

    Crazy really.

    We've an external box too

Getting that today. Ringing them to send someone out. If things dont improve then they can take it away.

I've changed from the provided Thomson router to my own Linksys WRT54GS. This is the same router I used on Digiweb Fixed Wireless Metro for the past year.

    739720576.png

    11969271.png

Still no problems with speeds but ping times still too variable. Will try playing TF2 now and report back if I'm still having very variable ping times.

edit ping times to boards look acceptable tonight and fair consistent so here is hoping swapping router resolved issues or they made some change to their mast.

ok it could be that there are fewwer users over weekend but it was great tonight on ping time. Constant 90ms. A little higher than I'd it to be but I can live with that as long as its consistent. I'll post over week if the ping times go to hell (are not stable).

When I was on digiweb I had 40ms ping times :D Good for melee battles :P

They stayed steady last night so I had uninterrupted gaming which was great.

This is my ping time to server I play on regularly. Now getting kicked for high ping:

It seems a bit too variable. most other servers are about 100ms average but I was able to play on above server no problems on digiweb where as I now get kicked for high ping when it goes over 150ms and it is hard to play with ping that high anyway.

Even on Digiweb the ping to this server was 80ms though so adding the extra 40-50 ms initial delay on Wimax pretty much brings it close to the 150ms to this server so it seems the delay is somewhere between my location and the server and not necessarily Imagines fault.

Changing the router seems to have helped a lot in stabilising pings too. The Thomson router that came with the service caused spiking pings and refused to allow one person to connect to it using saved details that had worked the previous day no problems for them.

Anyone think that Imagine are throttling donwloads into torrents? Getting speeds of 5mbps at ping times of 80 ms for the past 2 days now but unable to download into torrents.

Was the same for me for past two days although the problem was access to VAC secured servers which requires ports open.

I tried everything to fix it myself but it started working randomly last night about 20 to one in the morning.

Housemate was having problems with torrents and PSN wasn't working either on PS3.

I don't think they did it intentionally.

Hi I got same problems with torrents.
If you are using uTorrent client 2.0 go to settings and try different port.
I used to be able to download torrents month ago but now it's crap...
You can try redirecting the ports - try in google "Ports tunneling"

Are your torrents working now? I installed vuze but no luck. Will try port tunnelling though. Have also changed ports in utorrent but no luck.

At the moment only some of them works but speeds aren't great at all...
4 weeks ago I was getting top speeds within few sec, now, I've to wait approx 5 min for torrent to "warm up" up to 20-30 users seeding and speeds are like 80-90kb... It might go up to 600-700kb but only for a min, than it drops down again. It doesn't stay constant as it used to be...

BTW Does anyone know what's the monthly limit usage policy? 200gb? or less?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,007 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Realistically that could just be poor torrents though as that is still relatively few seeds.

If you want to test torrents, find a torrent with over a 1,000 seeds at least I'd say unless you know the seeds are good. On public trackers must people turn down their uploads.

I don't think it was intentional blocking on their part as Steam started working last night for me late at night. Also PSN went down and they say they support PS3 in their marketing blurb so I doubt they would have blocked that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,007 ✭✭✭✭thebman

Well they shut all ports again tonight. I got kicked from steam when I lost connection to vac server.

Didn't know access to other ports had time restrictions. seriously get your finger out Imagine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,820 ✭✭✭smelly sock

Can't believe that they are shutting ports and throttling. I was able to download fine during the cooling off period but once that expired I couldn't. Bit sly that really. Considering breaking the contract now myself. No point having a 7mbps package if you can't download.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,294 ✭✭✭MrVestek

I assume like many other ISPs they're using something like this to manage traffic.

Don't quote me on it though as I can't be 100% sure.

Emailed them, they said they would open ports for Steam but they are blocking peer to peer and not supporting it.
