;64831429]I'd be interested to know how many people really are afraid about the 'races mixing' and all that. It's one argument I've never understood. So what if the races mix? Why would it be such a terrible thing if the 'white race' (and what is white anyway, a Portuguese person is hardly the same colour as a Swede) died out? Why would it be so awful if everyone was light brown? It's just skin colour. In a couple of generations, the black people in Ireland will be as fully integrated as anyone else. What is the obsession with white people needing to remain pasty skinned and blue eyed? I hear this 'we don't want whites to die out' stuff from many people who wouldn't consider themselves racist. It just smacks to me of Aryan types considering themselves as pure breeds who don't want their descendants to be mongrels. I just don't really get it. My parents and even my English grandparents, who are quite anti-foreigners in terms of asylum seekers and such, would not bad an eyelid if their grandchildren were half black. Who cares?
What an idiotic post, you can be proud to be white and want to keep future generations of your family white without being racist.

Being white is part of being Irish, our country in 20 years will probably be unrecognisable and this change can upset people and no,these people cant just be dismissed as old or narrow minded. Its perfectly acceptable for someone to want their kids to marry someone of there own race and just because they do does not mean they are racist.

Its hilarious how the hippy brigade on here jump down the throat of someone proud to be white and label them a racist but if your proud to be black your a hero.

Why does the colour of someones skin matter? Sure, why not say that a particular hair colour or height is a part of being Irish. Its makes as much sense as the whole skin colour nonsense.

Wooooo. Nice choice of words there, "die out".

Who cares if the great whale dies out, eh?

I thought one of the great advantages of "diversity" was all the different colours and creeds of humanity. Yet, you want one to die out?

If a poster said "who cares if the black/brown/whatever race died out" there would be uproar. Now, before you start, I couldnt give a flying foook about race mixing. Just a bit peeved at the double standards.

There is no double standard. I'm looking at it from a white person's perspective as this is the one I encounter in Ireland. I'm well aware that many black people would have the same view about mixing, but that doesn't take away the fact that this attitude is extremely prevalent in 'white' countries, especially Ireland, from what I've seen.

As for the 'diversity' thing, don't you think it's a bit odd for all types of people to be living in the same country and never mix? It's not a zoo with different types of animals. We are all part of the Human *race* after all - is the fact some of us have darker skin than others a valid reason not to mix with each other?
;64831671]Yes, indeed. I'm sure if they had it their way, Italians, Spaniards and Greeks would never be classed as white. I know most Irish people don't consider me white. I always get asked what I write on forms and I always reply 'what the hell else would I write?' Aside from my quarter Italianness, the rest is Irish/English yet that one drop of 'foreign' blood is enough to override the fact I'm 3/4 'Aryan' as they say. It's pretty scary how people think. And I'm officially 100% white so I can only imagine how an actual mixed race person would feel. Sometimes it really does feel like a dog show, the pure breeds sneering at us mongrels with dirty coats. Some of the comments my own friends have come out with have really shocked me.
Another great irony, is that Iranians, and a whole bunch of people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India are descended from Aryans. Goes to show how silly the whole thing is.

    It doesnt matter a jot.

But its our history and we should be proud of it just as black people are proud of their skin colour and their African heritage,we can be proud of our white skin and our European heritage.

I just hate this whole PC brigade that jump down people throats for no reason and label them racist at any oppertunity.
Just because someone doesnt want their kids to have interreacial relationships does not mean they are racist.

Yeah, idiotic because you don't agree. That's YOUR opinion. I would consider your opinion racist.

In my opinion, yes it does mean they are racist. How does having dark skin make you any less Irish than having pasty skin, exactly? Am I less Irish than you because I'm sallow? Is my brother more Irish than me because he has freckles and light hair? Can you not see how ridiculous that is?
Its hilarious how the hippy brigade on here jump down the throat of someone proud to be white and label them a racist but if your proud to be black your a hero.

I have equal disdain for black people who don't want their kids to date or marry whites. Plenty of them around as well, but again, it's not as much of an issue in Ireland and this is an Irish board.

Of course that's racist and odd and creepy.

What's this hippy brigade? Is it like the fire brigade

Why would you be proud to be white? Proud to be Irish, fine. Proud to be a Dub, Corkman,Galwegian etc. fine. whats there to be proud about being white?

Its prevelant in "white countries"? Tell me, how many mixed babies in Africa, Asia or the middle east have a caucasian parent?

Can you explain your "who cares if whites die out" comment?

If diversity is about us living amonst each other, all different colours and creed, why do you want one ethnicity to die out?

I'm just going to add "PC Brigade" here while it's on a triple word score.

It's almost as hackneyed as "yore ma" at this stage.

Im married to an asian woman, years ago we used to get looks in the streets and the odd comment in the shops but now these days ppl dont look or say anything, I guess changing times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 212 ✭✭Laura_lolly87

I've had a few black boyfriends, its not really a problem in Dublin, no one looks twice, but down the country its a lot worse. Old people used to tut us in the street or shout abuse as cars drove past , once in a nightclub in Waterford people actually spat on us. If we said anything back it makes us the bad people.

Isn't it a matter of personal taste/choice more than anything else? I think the 'racist' card is being overplayed a little tbh.. Racism is about discrimination and hate of an entire group of people.. choosing not to procreate with someone of a different race is essentially no different than choosing not to procreate with someone with red hair or someone fat

Personally I'd have no problem being with a black woman if I felt they were right for me, but I wouldn't expect everyone to have the same take on it nor would I accuse them of racism because of it

    No its not at all.
I wouldnt say im proud to be white but Im not embarrassed by it as many seem to be.

If a Black person came on here and said they were proud to be black would you see it in a different light?

My definition of racism would be hating someone for the colour of their skin, not being near them, intolerant etc.Prefering for your kids not to go out with someone from a different race is not racist.

This actually ties into another AH thread, red heads and fat people aren't different races though. Why would somebody not want their children to procreate with another race unless they were racist?

Because they would like to retain their hertage.

Maybe out of fear for their mixed-race grandchildren in a world full of racists?

Celt is another label that is over done, there was no Celtic invasion of Ireland, more of a movement of culture and language.

But there's completely different historical connotations with black people, black people all down through the years have been persecuted and discriminated against purely because of the colour of their skin therefore when they say they're proud of being black it's like their way of saying they're not ashamed and they feel a bond with other black people through a common historical bond.

    Just like Jews.

    Just like Irish. etc.

White people as a whole don't have that common bond through history, so thats why i don't understand how anybody can claim to be proud to be white without sounding a little sinister.

im a white guy with a chinese girl, and whenever we head out walking in carlow town or anything, we do get looked at.

im not exactly good looking, while she is pretty, so i sometimes get 'how much did you pay for her?', and 'i see you've been visiting asianbabes.com'

she used to comment on the amount of strange looks we'd get walking around shopping centres and all, but she stopped doing that, because i think she could see my temper starting to rise. i rememebr walking into town with her for a night out, and a passing car had a load of lads in it and they shouted out the window 'haha mail order bride'!

her sister is also going out with an irish guy, and apparently he gets a small bit of it too. my last girlfriend was also asian, and we spent most of our time in dublin. we never got any hassle up there really.

Ah small mindedness, don't ya just think its cute perhaps some of these skobes should actually pick up a book and read how Irish people themselves were used and abused as slaves before becoming indoctrinated to this pseudo-nationalistic drivel

Who are you referring to as a scobe, someone who you disagree with.
The Irish being used as slaves is really a moot point in this argument,it encompases more than nationalistic pride.
