    Hi,

Is the windows 7 disc that you are using to install win7 an original disc?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

It is. I bought the full version of the Home Premium from Amazon.

I tried again and now it's asking where I want to install Windows. There are no options to pick anything though.

It's asking for a mass storage driver for installation now.

    Hi The Oggmonster

its sounds like its asking for sata drivers for you hard drive. what motherboard do you have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

Ok, I'm in the bios now. It doesn't seem to have them listed anywhere. But I could be looking in the wrong place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Ok go to (boot, boot priority) for asus motherboards, are the drives in the list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Yes my bios is like that. I'll have a look if it doesn't install this time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Ok when it has (press F6 to load drivers) on the screen dont press it.
    win7 should have the drives.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

Ok, earlier when I was looking through the bios my drives weren't showing up. But now they are. My hard drive is in IDE Channel 0 Master and my dvd drive is in IDE Channel 1 Master.

I tried installing a SATA driver from the disc I got with the motherboard. I didn't think it had worked. I'm not sure if that has now made them show up.

I will try again now. Hopefully it works now.

Nope that didn't work either :-(

Where should I press F6 for the drivers?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

There is an option at startup

Sata is found running at IDE MODE!

In the motherboard manual it says "The message that follows asks if you want to change it to AHCI mode and enable hot plug functionality for the SATA connectors.

    Should I pick AHCI mode?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

im not sure about ahci mode.
if there listed in the bios you should be able to install

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,401 ✭✭✭✭Anti

your hdd should be runnign in sata not ide mode. The ide mode is pretty much only used for 2nd gen ssd's.

So I should click Y to change it to AHCI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Host_Controller_Interface

from the looks of it ahci is sata mode.
    yes press Y to change.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

I changed it to AHCI mode.

I'm still having the same problem. Windows can't seem to find my hard drive. It wants me to install a mass storage driver.

do you have another copy of windows you can try.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

I have the 32bit disc. I bought the full copy from Amazon so don't have access to any more copies.

I'm going to try and boot from the disc drive in this pc. I'll just connect it up and see will that work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

after a bit of googling i think you need to download sata drivers.

SATA RAIDDateDescriptionVersionSize2009/12/03GIGABYTE SATA2 Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode)
Note: Press F6 during Windows setup to read from floppy.
    Download from :
    Asia Asia(China) America Europe Europe(Russia) : ftp / http1.17.52.020.19 MB

Using another disc drive didn't work. It's definitely something to do with the hard drive.

Can I run that driver from a USB key? I don't have a floppy drive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

    i think you can.

use 7zip and extract to your usb.

let us know if it works.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

    That hasn't worked either :-(

What if I was to connect my new hard drive to this pc and format it? Would Windows 7 recognise it then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Yes try it in another computer. the hard might be broken.
do you have another hard drive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

Just thinking. I have one from my PS3 from when I replaced the hard drive in that.

    It's a 40GB 2.5". Would I be able to connect that?

I connected the 2.5" drive up. It had SATA connection so I'll see if that's any different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

    i think you can.

Ok, with my other disc I can pick where to install Windows. This is a step further than I was getting. How do I know get my new hard drive to do this?

I have a 3.5" external enclosure. Could I connect it to this pc and format it? What file system should I use NTFS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Yes use the external enclosure and format to NTFS

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

in your manual and goto chapter 2-6 Integrated Peripherals
goto that screen in your bois

in the bios what are the settings for

PCH SATA Control Mode == ??

    SATA Port0-3 Native Mode == ??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

I put the new hard drive into this pc with my other one and it's not showing up in my computer or device manager.

I'll try with the external enclosure but that doesn't sound good does it?

Edit: I think I have the 2nd hard drive turned off in BIOS.

Windows 7 installed on that other drive. Thanks a lot for your help. You're a legend!! I'm sorry for taking up all your Saturday morning/afternoon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

no that doesn't sound good. where did you get the drive from.

thats ok im not doing anything today.

when you try the external enclosure if it dosen't comeup, right click on computer in the start menu and goto manage, then goto disk management.
if the drive is there right click on it and create a partition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

I did have it turned off in bios. It is showing up now but there's no info on it. The file system is RAW. I'm sure when I reformat it everything should work out ok.

I thought all drives were pre-formatted when you buy them. I could've saved a lot of hassle if I did this first. icon_redface.gif

I'll know for next time icon_lol.gif

Edit:When I reformat do I need to create a partition or will Windows do it when it's installing?

I meant to edit there, not quote

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

in windows right click on computer in the start menu and goto manage, then goto disk management.
the drive will be unallocated right click on it and create a new partition.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

There isn't an option to create a new partition. Just this:

    2rzyj9g.jpg

Will I just format as NTFS? If I was doing a partition, how big would the partition need to be for Windows Home Premium 7 64bit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

Ok the partition is there format NTFS, give windows about 100gb

you can format the full drive as one partition if you want

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

I fecked up with my drive there but have it formatting now.

I won't have a chance to install Windows today but I reckon it'll work now. The fact it was unformatted must have been the problem. I'm just surprised Windows 7 couldn't format as it installed. XP could do it (Although I don't know if I ever tried it with a RAW drive).

Again, I'd like to thank you for your help. I'll post again tomorrow to let you know if it worked.

Without too much hacking, you can install win7 from a memory stick / external hd*. Google it, lot of blogs have detailed instructions.

    * Provided you have a second pc to throw the stuff from win7 install dvd to a memory stick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

    Hi slowlydownwards

you must have only read the first post.

nobody asked about installing from a usb key

he had a problem with a hard drive not the cd drive.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭The Oggmonster

Hey, dun79, I'm posting this from my new pc with Windows 7 installed :-)

The problem was that the new drive wasn't formatted. I used my old pc to format it and it installed no problem.

God knows what I would have done if I didn't have another pc.

Thanks for all your help trying to get it sorted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 165 ✭✭dun79

    Hi Oggmonster

good to hear it worked out for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,243 ✭✭✭DECEiFER

It seems you've solved the problem.

    Just note the following:

    - There is no F6 command when installing Windows Vista or 7, that was for XP. Windows Vista and 7 have default AHCI drivers, but do allow you to install your own in a sub-section of the OS installation drive selection. You can use a USB key or take it from the hard drive, or indeed a floppy drive (unlike with XP, you have a choice). The default drivers normally suffice for the purpose of the installation, though.

    - You should run your SATA drives in ACHI mode and not in IDE, or run them in RAID, if applicable. This is selectable from within the BIOS. Some el cheapo OEM motherboards don't have ACHI mode, but any half decent one should.
