Its a joke. But i suppose beggars cant be choosers. They need the money and Aviva will provide it.

But i think we're forgetting that the real scandal here is that corporate contracts will force rugby and soccer matches to take place in a 50,000 seater stadium, even when there is obvious demand for up to another 30,000 tickets. John Delaney has been parroting that line relentlessly. So we have a world class 80,000 seater used for 6 months of the year by an amateur organisation, while our world class rugby team and Trap and the boys play in a mid-sized stadium where there will be a perpetual lack of tickets.

    Only in fúcking Ireland.

Yes, only in fúcking Ireland would a country our size have the honour to be able to claim two world class stadiums with a combined attendance of over 130,000 as our own.

    Something about sandwiches

lol ye good idea! We can have the games played in Landsdowne and throw another 80,000 in Croker with a few plasmas stuck in the middle! Brilliant idea!!

BTW, with all the corporate prawn sandwich boxes, theres gonna be considerably less general admission seats! Its also accepted that the atmosphere is generated from these standard seats so the less you have, the worse the atmosphere, generally speaking.

Vincent Browne happily skipped over the 'few million' this is worth to the IRFU and the FAI.

The deal is worth €44 million over ten years. I'll call the stadium Buckingham Palace for all it matters if it means that much money will be re-invested in the sports.

If that much public moey was spent on it then there's no way a corporate brand name should be put on it, but it being Ireland I'm sure a few complimentary holidays, some free insurance for the familieis and brown enevelopes to those responsible ironed out that little crease.
    Disgraceful

Why couldn't Trent sponsor it? :(

And after the ten years the name is up for grabs again.

Additionally the 44 million is going to grassroots teams/underage.

They can christen it what they like, but we can still call it what we like.

Personally speaking, they can call it The Bertie Ahern Suerpdrome for all I care, so long as we don't have to get shafted by the gah for the loan of their stadium.

The point depot will always be "the Point"
Landsdowne will always be known as Landsdowne.

Only the gullable media types will refer to them by their pimp names

You forgot to mention the realistic people who in the case of the Point, do not hold a nostlgic love for a building that was an absolute kip.

On a broader level if the government partly paid for it, it's a sign that further things will be sold off to private enterprise. Health service being the main one. You really want a health service like they have in the US? I sure dont.

By the way, the Point is still called the Point on the Luas :)

Wouldn't be too worried about it. Irish sports "fans" are just glory hunters and occasion hunters. Check out Croker the attendances for the Ireland football team:
24/03/2007 Republic of Ireland 1–0 Wales Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 72,539
28/03/2007 Republic of Ireland 1–0 Slovakia Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 71,297
13/10/2007 Republic of Ireland 0–0 Germany Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 67,495
17/10/2007 Republic of Ireland 1–1 Cyprus Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 54,000

15-Oct-08 Republic of Ireland 1–0 Cyprus Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 55,833
11-Feb-09 Republic of Ireland 2–1 Georgia Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 45,000
28-Mar-09 Republic of Ireland 1–1 Bulgaria Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 60,002
10-Oct-09 Republic of Ireland 2–2 Italy Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 70,670
14-Oct-09 Republic of Ireland 0–0 Montenegro Croke Park, Dublin Attendance: 36,442
14-nov-09 Republic of Ireland 0–1 France Croke Park, Dublin Attendance 74,103

The only time the place even came close to selling out was when the stadium was still a novelty or when when we were looking like qualifyng AND the opposition was big. Why even the visit of Germany couldn't generate enough interest here to sell-out!

I'm sure the figures would have been similar for rugby had that team been losing instead of winning.

So, basically when both teams (rugby/football) are shíte again getting tickets for the New Lansdowne road shouldn't be 'as' tough as people are making out ie real fans might actually get to see their teams play.

In fairness, When the Irish rugby team was at it's worst in the 90s you still had Landsdowne selling out for all competitive games.

They can stick any name up a new stadium.
If it is built on the same spot as the old one, people will use the old name.

New stadium in new location and people will use the new name.

    Reminds me of this...
When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.

Governments are whores for big business. It's pretty pathetic, to be honest.

That's what I thought once. But "The Point" proved that's not the case in this city. I think once you can get the fans to away for any extended amount of time the naming becomes up for grab and with the newspaper, tv and radio refering only to it only as "A***a stadium" the name will inevitably stick.

Out of interest, Iis there examples of non-municipality-owned traditional stadium (I'm talking 80-100 y/o) that was "branded" while the fans were still using it and the name actually managed to stick? I can't think of any instance.

They keep changing the name of the stands at Fratton Park but no one pays any attention.

The announcer will say "happy birthday to Fred in the Jobsite stand" and you can see half the ground asking where the **** it is. It is and always will be the Fratton End.

Did the stadium ever actually have a name? Lansdowne Road is its address, surely, and continues to be.

Anyone else find it a bit funny that most of those crying about it still being called 'Landsdowne' in their hearts can't even spell the damn word?

All i want is a nice stadium to watch sports in, i honestly couldn't give a sihte what its called.

Look at arsenal and the Emirates, sure its named after an airline, but its been one of the best thing thats ever happened to them. Thanks partly to the stadium, they're actually making money when most big clubs are in debt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

So are we going to go back to calling O'Connell Bridge, the Carlisle Bridge and changing Dublin to Blackpool etc etc. It's just a f*king name, call it whatever you like. It's still money that's been given to Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,380 ✭✭✭geeky

A great man once said 'a rose by any other name would smell as sweet'.

Sure, it might be a bit annoying to be reminded of the insurer every time anything happens at the new stadium, but that's what allowed a quality venue to be built. Unless we were going to take on the responsibility ourself as a nation (and good lord remember the outcry over the bertiebowl) I don't think we've a right to moan.

I guess we should be grateful it at least has a name like Aviva or Emirates rather than what some of these teams got landed with. :D

I wouldn't mind if it were named "Aviva Lansdowne Road"

It's the removal of all traces of the stadium's past I don't like.

I don't care what the stadium is called.

Michael Buble is playing there in September and I'm going.
