    any noteworthy performances?

I only saw the first half mate so i cant really comment on him
Smalling partly at fault for the second goal imo. Not the only one, but his part of the problem was that he didn't really do anything, didn't try to take control of the situation.

Every time I have seen him play (which i will admit straight off is only 3 or 4 occassions) I have seen him at fault, or partially at fault for a goal. I've not been impressed with our 12million replacement for the inevitably departing Vidic ;-D

using my trick with the hidden smiley :D

Regarding United players international participation today:

Rooney played 85 mins for England, Brown the whole game and Carrick 45 mins.
Evra played 90 minutes in Paris which is disappointing, I think he's in need of a rest.
Tosic came off the bench to score in Serbia's 3-0 victory.
PIG and Berbatov went head to head in Poland vs Bulgaria. Berbatov came off at half time which is great news, considering the pitch was in a dreadful state.
Nani started for Portugal, and was subbed after 61 mins.
Corrie Evans came on at HT for Northern Ireland and did well by all accounts in a DM role.
Park played the full game for Korea, but the game was played in England so no travel worries.
Fletch captained Scotland for 83 minutes before coming off.

Fletch, Rooney, Evra and Brown may be rested at the weekend.

With the talk about smalling, don;t they have a buyback clause on Shawcross, if so they should definitely go for him, imo he is one of the best centre backs in the league

Dont know if we have a buy back clause, but if we did I would love to bring him back. Has been a revelation since Stoke came up.

Noticed Fergie phoned him after the Ramsey tackle to sympathise with him. Made me think he might be considering bringing him back.

Havent heard a buy back clause mentioned regardling him at all, would definitely be worth exploring though, said it in January id have been ahppier if we had resigned him rather then Smalling, largely based on my limited amount of games i had seen Smalling play i guess, but alot of it was to do with how well Shawcross has played for Stoke and the fact that he has gotten an England call up despite playing for one of the "lesser" teams is testement to that

    Did he really?

Thats probably just Fergie being the legend he is though, all the young players at the club say he is like a dad to them when asked and im sure he wanted to console the lad after what had happened

Pretty sure I read he rang Shawcross. I have no link or anything, nor am i bothered looking. Makes more sense as well, why would he ring Pulis to see if he was alright?

According to wikipedia there is a First Refusal clause on him, I heard something about that when there was rumours linking him with liverpool but i don't understand the full circumstances on how the clause would work

According to the The Times football podcast " The Game " this week, we do certainly have a buy back clause with Shawcross.

Would he want to come back to be rotation? Doubt it.

On current form he'd play every week.

but with Rio's situation he may not be rotation, he may very well be first choice next season if Rio doesnt recover, and he has been outstanding for Stoke so he would merit a place in the team on form regardless

If there is a first refusal clause (and Wiki doesnt convince me) then we should definitely look into that situation again at a later date

Hmmm, but one stumbling block could be Fergie, bringing him back would be like admitting he was wrong to let him go in the first place :D

    cant see that!

if Fergie had any intention of bring Shawcross back, i'd be pretty sure he wouldnt have shelled out £12m on Smalling.

Thats true. Still, if Vidic does end up leaving, and with Rio's back troubles, we're definitely gonna need another centre back.

be a huge risk to bring in another young defender imo if Vidic does leave. with Rios back trouble looking like it aint going anywhere, Smalling/Evans/Shawcross would be a fairly inexperienced trio to pick two from.

can you link me to where its officially stated he paid 12million for Smalling?

this i agree with, depending on finances, if Rio is gonna be a Ledley King player from now on and Vidic does actually leave, we will need an experienced head at the back so we will have to dip into the market then

cant think of anyone off the top of my head who i would like though (could be due to tiredness)

Aye, but dont know who else we could bring in to be honest. Most people would want us to bring in Chiellini, but I cant see us having the money for him (considering we need to strengthen in other areas too), and I doubt he would leave Italy to be honest. Unless we can pull another gem from the Russian league. I just think that if there is a stipulation for us to bring Shawcross back, we would be foolish to pass on it.

pretty much every media outlet reported it as that.

iirc he has a 10m release clause that had to be met & then Utd topped Arsenals bid. of £10m, i'm sure a lot of it is made up of add ons & in spread out payments like all modern transfers.

it's widely reputed to be a £7m deal.

plus wages, add-ons, etc, who knows? but i don't think any official confirmation on the cost of the deal was ever given.

EDIT: ha, Al found some other links that i didn't know existed.

no official price was ever released

i understand how annoying it is for liverpool fans sometimes when people just make up transfer fees for players

Mr.Alan, the media had a range of prices from 5 million to 14 million

all i can say for sure is we did not pay 12 million up front for this guy, and that im sure there are plenty of performance and success add ons included in the deal

if Fulham were driving a really hard bargain and looking for silly money up front they would not have been allowed to keep him for the rest of the season imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,715 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

to be fair, i doubt very very much it was £12m up front.

however much i'd like to believe it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

of course it wasnt 12m up front, transfers rarely ever work like that.

and Utd never release prices of players they buy, we still know there or thereabouts though.

with Arsenals interest imo, i' be shocked if it wasnt on the high end of the media prices quoted.

why United may have had a bid for the lad accepted, then Arsenal decided to bid too, they bid whatever amount, it was also accepted

and united offered the lad a bigger contract

just cause Wenger said united offered more money doesnt mean we offered more money as a transfer fee, it could well mean we offered him more money in his contract, that would probably make more sense anyway

Thing is, if he had a 10 mill release clause and Arsenal offered 10, there's no reason United would have to top it. We could just have offered the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,372 ✭✭✭✭Mr Alan

Arsenal never spoke to the player though so i dont think is wages Wenger is refering to.

Hodgson also spoke about how it was a lot of money that Utd paid for him, anyway, it doesnt matter we'll never know for sure so can only speculate!

emm, it says in the Mirror one that United had an £8m bid accepted and then went back and paid £4m more when Arsenal bid  Is it just me or does that sound totally retarded to anyone else?
