How is that achieved? Is it covered by legislation or something? Just curious.

Why would a phone bill list calls to a free number ?

Why wouldn't it? A phone bill is essentially an invoice for services. I have often seen on receipts items listed with an associated zero charge. S it would be quite possible for it to appear on a phone bill, don't think they do though.

    Very true.
Either way, its distressed people, maybe my own neighbour behind their curtain that is seeking desperate help.
Sad that the numbers in this day and age are so high. Its not good at all and makes me just want to do more.

Go do it so. Maybe you could take all the hours you spend on boards, and instead spend it working answering childline calls.

Your new to the boards I presume so I will take it that you don't know what others long here do.
I help and fund-raise with a certain female crises centre as well as lead a group opposing cuts for Crumlins hospital and doing what ever work I can do for them freely that means they can get more equipment.
(My daughter is a long term patient and will be for years to come)
I hope thats enough work for me to do, for you to be satisfied with.
Please think of donating something the next time you pass a collector of these causes. They are both worthy ones. All the best.

My oldest sis lives with my grandad. On wknds when I was younger and she'd be out when she was 18-19 and I was staying over and had nothing to do, nothing on tele for me to watch, grandad gone to bed, house was quiet, waiting up for sis to come in so I could wreck her drunken head and rob her small change from her purse.

Guess what I done. I used to ring childline. Why? To talk, have a chat, have a midnight friend to pass the time with me.

Was I ever in trouble of some sort? No.
    Ever abused? No.
    Worried about something? No.
A bit lonely at the time? Yes.

So you see, they're there to be a friend aswell as help and talk to children. Childline offer an invaluable resource and a gateway of release for kids. Some calls are serious and others are like mine, a child looking for someone to talk to, have a laugh with. I always felt comfortable ringing after the 1st couple of times. Sometimes they even knew it was me ringing because I was like clock work and I always managed to nab 1 of the 3 people who regularly talked to me :D.

There was never anything personal but, I always felt at ease talking to them. Conversation always just flowed. How was your week, school, training, what you doing tomorrow, any new jokes for me.

I had friends who pranked them. I never spoke to them again when I found out.

My only regret is since turning 18 I can't call anymore, had to say goodbye to my buddy over the phone. Who knows, maybe I can volunteer? :)

From my previous post you can see I was on their site yesterday. I noticed that the "hide me" button was on the bottom of the page and could disappear out of sight as the page length changed and would be hard to find in a moment of panic. I suggested to them that it should be at the top and should be a more visible colour. Sure enough this morning there is an extra "hide me" button in the top right hand corner, still the same colour but that might be a bit more more work than they could do in a hurry.

They are on the ball, fair play to them.
