Rira in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a great spot. Good food, great pints. Good Irish music, Bell X 1, U2, etc playing, not rebel songs or the likes. And normally full of locals, which is always a good sign.

I went to one in Zaragoza years ago that was good but can't remember what it was called or where in the city it was.

The James Joyce in Madrid is an overpriced ****hole. I was there for the rugby yesterday and it was €4.20 for a bottle of local beer. I didn't buy another drink after that but the other Irish guys there said the Irish drinks were just as expensive as back home.

There is another one in Madrid just off Puerta del Sol called Fontana de Oro which is brilliant. A big screen for the sports, a decent DJ every night, open til 6am and the staff aren't stereotypical Irish people or even Irish. Also, lots of locals go there so it's a good mix, not just homesick Paddies. They have this deal where a shot of Jameson's is a euro for the last five minutes of every houre: it completely ****s you up. Also, pints of Guinness are €3.

Barney Vallely's in Cologne was great. Nothing tacky, just looked like a regular irish pub and the owner was sound on. We'd been in to watch the GAA and he got the two fellas I was with a free drink after a while (stupid me decided to go get a quick nap and missed out).

I'd never normally go into Irish bars abroad though but if there's a GAA match on there's not much choice.
