From the Dublin Mountains. You might get a nice view from Howth Head too.

The Photographer's Ephemeris is a fantastic free tool to help you answer these questions yourself, it'll show you sunrise and sunset for any location you choose.

I had a quick look and if you want a sunset across water in the Dublin area it seems Howth is the best bet, from the Bailey light the sun will set behind poolbeg powerstation this evening.

the OP's question was about Dublin City Centre, Howth and dublin mountains are a bit far from there, no?

not many places I would imagine, maybe Phoenix park at a stretch or down along the quays from the custom house to the Point will give you a good view of the sun setting over the city...

Yeah, have to learn to read the OP's question before i jump in with an answer.

I've just had a quick look and it seems that from the ha'penny bridge the sun will be setting straight up river.

I'm impressed! Is there an easy way to calculate the compass position of sunset for a given co-ordinate and day in the year?

    Edit: found http://www.largeformatphotography.info/sunmooncalc/
azimuth angle given, but no map :-(

Yes TPE gives you all that info, and more, much more actually.

I see there's an iphone version in beta, might be useful to some.
