Is there a list anywhere on the UPC website to say where they have what services?

I have sky at the minute, no problems with it but would like to get the phone/broadband and tv on the one bill as it's a lot cheaper!

Boo-urns! Just rang customer service there to enquire when HD would be available in my area (Portmarnock, Co. Dublin). End of the year, most likely November or December. Wish they'd stop pimping it on the info channel when it's not available in half the country.

Exactly. They advertise it ad nauseum even though it's not available in most areas. Really annoying!

UPC website says HD is not available in my area. I rang up yesterday just to check as the website isn't always up to date. HD IS available in my area but they will not let me do a self install. They will charge me €60 for an engineer to pop around and set it up.

I asked what was involved in the setup. UPC said that it's pretty much taking the cable out of the old box and plug it into the HD box. I said that this was a ridiculous charge and if that is the only thing done by the engineer [as in no external cabling to be done], why there was no self install option. They say it's because they don't have a courier setup in the area. I offered two Dublin address, family and work. They said no.

I told them that I'm not paying someone €60 to plug a cable into a STB and threatened to downgrade my services. CC rep went off and talked to manager and came back with an honest sorry.

So... I downgraded my broadband from 20Mb to 15Mb saving me a tenner a month with, let's be honest, no significant speed change. I also downgraded my TV from max to value, saving me €13 a month. I'm willing to lose those extra channels.

So, in UPC's ignorance, they have just lost approx €246 over the next year [figure includes once off downgrade fees] rather than gaining an extra €60 HD rental. An actual loss of €306 approx per year.

I also told them that if they found that self install was available in the future that I would re-consider upgrading all services to the max packages again.

We are no longer in the boom times UPC. The sooner you realise that, the better.

i was recording a program tonight from 9pm to 10pm

and when i went to turn on the box to watch something

a message poped up saying that a program was being recorded.

    and i had two choices

press standby to continue recording the program

    or

press ok to watch tv and stop recording the program.

this has never shown up before anyone else get this.

You had it set to record something else on a different channel at the same time.

The only way it can do this is to go into standby. Check your planner to see what was set to record.

this only happens when 2 channels on the box want to record at the same time.

Just haveign a billing issue which it seems is related to HD. I was put on the Fibre ultimate package, thats €95 a month. I got my first bill and they add up to €118.75 on my bill, with a discount further down of €18.74. So that's €100.01 in total. Rang up to see what teh story is and I'm being told the package price doesnt include the €5 for the HD box.
The girl isnt able to tell me how I can have the package for just the €95 or how I can watch the 9 HD channels without the HD box I've to pay an extra €5 for. Is there any way I can explain to them, without usign logic, seeing as I've used that approach?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,669 ✭✭✭who_me

    That's crazy Stekelly :p

    I'd say something like this:

Me: You're advertising a package for 95 euros, what do I get for that?
UPC: Well, you can get the Fibre Ultimate...
Me: No, that costs 100 euros. What's the package you're advertising for 95?
UPC: Actually that's the Fibre Ultimate...
Me: No. That's 100 euros. Are you telling me you're advertising Fibre Ultimate for 95 euros when you have no such package?

..and then report them (or threaten to) for false advertising.

Hi Stekelly,I recommended friends to at least check out the new deals from UPC,some of them including myself took up their offers, everything from an Analouge upgrade to the Ultimate package. All have received much higher bills than the website suggested.

We had a dispute with NTL about two years ago and after phoning some consumor protection Govt organisations were told UPC do not come under any regulatory body?

I could go on and on about them but the bottom line is IMO they cannot be trusted to be totally transparent on their website.

for those who pay by direct debit or credit card UPC already have the money, earning interest in their bank account not the customers who they have either overcharged or assumed customers would keep the free Sky sports beyond the two months free as payments are in advance.

They are charging Sky sports from the day people signed up to the new packages which in most cases would not co-incide with the billing date.
So yes there IS two months free Sky sports but the bill is charging from switch on date, then a credit for two free months and a charge based on the assumption that customers will keep SS beyond the two free months.
    I spoke to them and told them all i was paying was the e68 for Dig max+ {again that is paying for a service i have no guarantee will be there for the two months}

It would have been easy for them to flash up a message towards the end of the free two months stating unless you wish to continue watching sky sports you must confirm you wish to keep the service, but NO they are hoping people wont bother to cancel or even realise that they have to.

Next i am waiting for a downgrade charge for a service they offered free when my SS is switched off!

    They can go and get stuffed as i told CS{but in more polite terms!:)}
So long as the customers have to do all the work they will need less and less employee's;)

Did you get this sorted? I'm considering signing up for the Fibre Ultimate package, according to their website it should be €70 for the first two months, then €95 afterwards

The "free" sky sports drops it to €70 for the first two months. I also got a leaflet in the door which would seem to confirm this. It also says there's a call setup charge for the "free" landline

    Bloody UPC!!
Have been waiting for HD in my area (Portmarnock) and got a letter from Sky today to say that they'd installed a communal dish in our apartment complex and that HD+ was available etc. As tempting as that is I'd still rather stay with UPC as it's cheaper. I just checked on UPC site again on the services available in your area bit and saw this:

    upchdportmarnock.jpg

Woo and Yay I said. So rang UPC and said HD me please.

UPC: Sorry sir, it's not available in your area
Me: But it says it's available on your site
UPC: The site's not up to scratch
I swear he said the site's not up to scratch.
Me: When will it be available?
    UPC: Don't know.
Me: Is there not even rough plan to deliver to certain areas by certain dates etc?
UPC: Not that I'm aware of

    etcetera etcetera.

    Useless!

clearly you dont like UPC... So don't go with them... And stop blocking up the phonelines for people who do want to get through... Go with sky! Sure if you were a UPC customer you were gonna moan about something anyways!

Go into settings on any UPC branded box and press 1789 scroll down the menu that appears.

If there are 16 transport streams then yes you can get HD the call center database may be out of date if there are less then your out of luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 604 ✭✭✭Goolay

Wow, thanks for the info Ranicand!

I checked and it does go up to 16 (quality 100% on all, strength varies between 100 and 65%) but there's a blank line between 13 and 15. Presume that means it's a no go?

    thanks again

No the blank means there are only HD channels on that stream and your regular box can not read it.

    You can get HD there.

Edit you will have to get through to somebody at UPC with a brain and explain this.:D

    Are you sure of that?

Mine goes up to 16 (a recent phenomenon, it previously stopped at 13, then went up to 15 with a gap at 14), but someone on here who works for UPC tells me that the main cable feeding Bray isn't capable of delivering HD (or BB for that matter) and that it may be some time now before it's upgraded.

My area was among the first batch of areas for HD.

I had 13 Transport Streams and just before HD that jumped to 16.

The extra 3 do the trick two of them have regular channels mixed with HD ones 14 only has HD that is why it does not read on a regular box.

If you have a friend with HD and you borrow their box I bet it will work there now.

So I got the following- http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/2884/img0027dz.jpg

Presuming this means i can get HD despite what the fools at the end of the phone are telling me
