VAT register Jobseekers?

    Hi folks,
    I'm trying to work as a freelance photographer, have an offer of some work at the weekend.

    It's my first time doing any paid work for this, I've done it for free (or for a lunch/dinner!) up to now. I've a few questions...

    Do I have to register for VAT/ as a sole trader?
    If so, do I include VAT on my invoice for the days work?
    If not, how do I explain it to the people I'll be working for, or do I just accept the money from them & say nowt?

    Also, I'm currently unemployed, and have just been moved from jobseekers benefit to J.S. allowance. Does anyone know if this will be affected if I declare the income?

    Any advice is muchly appreciated!

    Read the guide to VAT in the stickies. Social welfare are the men to contact regarding payments recieved while on social welfare.

    A quick warning- anyone advising tax avoidance will get a ban. It's in the charter and I'm mentioned it again. Fair warning.

    Hi

    It probably will affect your JA and you should contact the DSFA as a result.

    However, why not try and go on the short term enterprise allowance instead by going to your local employment partnership and telling them that you are trying to start a business as a freelance photographer? If accepted on the scheme you will be able to keep your JA for a year while building up a potential business for yourself. Worth a shot!!!! You have nothing to loose.
