I mean it's not like taxing on the mind or body or anything.

You stroll around with usually some other out of shape person for a few hours hitting a ball around a field.
Generally speaking if its sunny.
If its raining, you most likely don't even bother.

And if you're any good you get to have somebody to carry your bag FFS.

Personally I think its an overrated past-time for well to do people with nothing better to do and then they inevitably get hooked on what they think they're doing really good at.

Then the worst bit. They feel compelled to talk about it for ages.

Of course there are exceptions and some people make loads of money out of hitting the ball. Tiger Woods or Harrington. But remember they are the exception. That doesn't cut it as an excuse for all of us to justify the status of this 'activity'. There's more than 6 billion people out there.

But what do you guys think ?

A real sport or just complete tosh ?

Have you played golf before? It's a sport. There is strategy involved, it is not always about coming off the field sweaty and out of breath. If not, then remove Horse Racing (beating the shite out of a horse to run around a field) from the list too.

I would suggest the OP tries getting out for a round of golf, as one of the hardest games to master perhaps he would find it can be taxing on the mind and its not simply a stroll around a field! Perhaps the reason why top level professionals are paid so much..

I would suggest the OP tries getting out for a round of golf, as one of the hardest games to master perhaps he would find it can be taxing on the mind and its not simply a stroll around a field! Perhaps the reason why top level professionals are paid so much..

I'd agree, very hard game to get right.

Horse racing is a complete load of mickey, in that it requires a wager to give it any semblance of meaning at all. I would deffo class golf as a sport, albeit a veeeery boring one to watch. And embarrassing to play if you're shít like me.

One time playing pitch and putt I totally sliced the ball and it whacked some guy on another green right in the face. Needless to say it was then I decided that golf was not for me.

I like playing Golf find it way for me relax soemtimes. Everyone to there own.

I think Golf is very skillful sport played all major sports here and in pure skill its toughest. Overall yes you dont need to be in best shape although many golfers noadays are in decent shape as there are many benifits to it when playing.

Best thing that I've ever seen Golf related:

Was out playing Pitch & Putt with my family. Took us a while, 5 of us and none of us play but good craic none the less. We finally get to the 18th hole, my little bro (13 at time) knocks the ball up onto the green. He's not been into it since the second hole.

He walks up to the ball, on the green of the 18th hole and says "No" and puts his club down. He just lay down, refusing to play anymore because he didn't like it despite us telling him it was his last shot and it'd be for his total score he point blank refused to pick up the club.

Couldn't stop laughing at the cheeky git.

OP: Although it's not a physically taxing sport, it's extremely tough in terms of skill. I find it hard enough to even hit the bloody ball without putting a nick chunk in the ground without trying hit the thing far.

On the carrying a bag of clubs - That'd be no problem. You're stopping every few minutes for a few minutes, carrying a comfortable bag - you'd swear it's labouring.

No idea what hitting 120+ balls would be like for half an hour so can only take your word for it.

Call me judgmental, but I just cannot get my head around any person under the age of 50 playing golf.

Yeah its an excellent game, particularly when you get past the duffer stage and start to get reasonably good at it.

It can be very very frustrating though.

You can get membership on some courses for 400 or 500 a year, thats about a 10er a week equalivant to 2 pints.

Where I play the snooty upper class attitude is a thing of the past all sorts of people play.

My membership for the year is €100 (love student discounts!

). It might be a 9 hole course but it's great for newbies and the more experienced golfer. Going out for the first time this year in 3 weeks time, looking forward to it!

There is so many young people playing it in our club...it's just an old age stereotype that some people refuse to let die coz they can't play it.
