Dissident republicans are being blamed for a car bomb attack in Northern Ireland just weeks after the country's two main parties reached a landmark powersharing deal.

The vehicle was reversed into the security gates of Newry courthouse in County Down and abandoned.

Two coded warnings were then received at a local hospital and a business around 30 minutes before the device went off.

Police, who were in the process of evacuating people from the area when it exploded, said it was a "miracle" no-one was hurt.

The main gates were badly damaged in the explosion, which was within walking distance of restaurants and bars.

The scene remained cordoned off today as police and forensic experts checked for other bombs.

Is it all kicking off again? Bit of a concern considering how close to the border newry is... although they could be doing their bit for the irish economy by scaring all the southeners away:pac:

I take you point and I agree somewhat - however I take consolation in that we can joke about these out of date muppets trying to play big boys, while more serious, better people are continuing on with their peace talking - which in turn allows the rest of us to goon joking IN PEACE.

cut northern ireland off the rest of the country and watch it float away. it's like africa and israel/palestine, they're better off forgotten about until they grow up and become civilised like the rest of us.

Breathtaking ignorance. Northern Ireland is civilised in the same way that not everyone in Dublin and Limerick takes part in drug dealing and drive-by shootings. You're tarring 1.5 million people with the same brush as about 500.

We are all tarred with this brush in the eyes of the world, if we move that place off in to the North Atlantic it narrow the worlds focus and would save on the tar.

Do these idiots actually think they have support from anyone when they carry out cowardly acts like this? I honestly cant understand how they they think that a car bomb is going to get them anywhere (except hopefully jail), with pretty much everyone else trying to work for peace.
