    Hi,
I'm currently doing the alternative program for co-op. I changed my modules from my initial selection with the co op office, but http://www.si.ul.ie tells me im registered for the modules I initially selected. I e-mailed the co-op office about this 11 days ago and they said they were letting SAA know of the changes in modules that day and that SAA would update the database soon. There is still no change in my modules on SI and i'm worried about not being on class e-mail lists, should I get onto the coop office again or contact SAA? if so how do i get in contact with SAA?

    Thanks

There are a couple of ways that you can get SAA. You can phone one of the administrators. Their contact details are on this webpage: http://www2.ul.ie/web/WWW/Services/Student_Affairs/Student_Administration/Student_Academic_Administration/Staff_and_Useful_Links

You can call into me in the SU and I can phone one of the more helpful administrators for you and find out what's happened/attempt to fix it.

You can go to SAA and speak to the one administrators. SAA is in the Main Building; go in the ski-slopes doors, up the stairs to the left, go left and it's the (second?) office on your right.

    Hey,

Not trying to be vague, but that depends on a number of things. Generally, changes to courses have to be approved by committees within the University (i.e. Academic Programme Review Committee). A lot of courses were changed in the last 2ish years because of ECTS, for example some courses went from 6 to 5 modules in certain semesters.

If you want more specific information on your course, you can call into me in the SU, send me an email on Aoife.Finnerty@ul.ie or send me a PM here.

    Hope this helps,

    Aoife

if we have a serious problem with how our course is being treated/changed is it your remit or the welfare officers?

Programme changes are a matter for the Education Officer, if there is anything further that any of the rest of us can do on this, Aoife will let us know.

As Derek said, it's all mine. Would you like to call into me some time this week, if you have time? You can get all my contact details on the ULSU website (http://www.ulsu.ie/officers/education), if you want to call or text with a time that suits.

Hi Thomas. Do you have a Class Rep? If so (s)he/they should be able to help with those kind of module based issues. If not, then get back to me again and we'll take it from there.

    Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that I'm still here for any education related questions. If it's to do with your course then I can answer it or direct you to somebody else who can.

    All the best,

    Aoife

Just a general question: How many teaching weeks are left? I keep hearing about revision weeks and study weeks, so I'm just confused as to how many weeks are left with lectures. Is it true aswell, lecturers can't give new material during the revision week or w/e that week is called?

I can make a stab at this in the absence of Aoife. :)

    Presuming this is week 11...

[a] There is one more teaching week left: week 12, which is next week.

Week 13 is generally given over to the students as a study/revision week. Though some modules run optional lectures or help centres [Maths Learning Centre for example] during this week to aid with exam preparation.

[c] Regarding the last point; in the unlikely event that you have lectures or tutorials scheduled for week 13 by the lecturer; any material given out in them is NOT examinable - don't bother with it.

    Hi there,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. There is one Teaching Week left i.e. Week 12. Week 13 is Reading Week but it is referred to as a Teaching Week by scheduling. Although it is uncommon, it is not contrary to any regualtions for lecturers to hold classes during W13.

The SU has always argued that it is not acceptable for examinable material to be introduced during Week 13, as it does not give students enough time to assimilate the information, address any reading that may be required and then be examined on it. This is especially the case if it is not provided for in the course outline. In such a case it is a breach of regulations according to a former SU Education Officer.

I've emailed the Chair of the Academic Regulations Committee for clarification on the issue. Hopefully I'll get it for you ASAP. Sorry it's not a quick answer!

    Aoife

Duly noted and responded to. If you or anyone else thinks they've found threads that I should be able to comment/answer questions on feel free to post them here.

He responded this morning to say that to the best of his knowledge it was unacceptable for lecturers to give out (new) examinable material in Week 13.

Unacceptable maybe but it still happens. The lecturers have to finish the full course and with some modules its absolutely ridiculous what they think that they can fit into 12/13 weeks. I will have at least one module that will have new material that will be examined but it is an unfortunate fact of having a very important topic that has to be covered.

In an ideal world this wouldn't be the case but we don't live in this perfect land where everything goes to plan and all lecturers are perfectly on time with their material. To those who have this problem start complaining when its 4 or 5 modules otherwise just buck up and accept that this year you will have to do some extra work.

A D1 is a passing grade, you will only have to repeat it if your QCA is below 2.0 after the summer exams.

weird I was gonna ask a similar question in academic lit, i got a d1 in xmas, grand cos i'm over 2.0, but if (when) i get a fail, and a fail as in a N.G, can you still repeat something with a N.G?

Yep.... so long as your QCA can come back above 2.0!!

Also your only allowed to fail four a year so if this is your 5th fail..... your here for another year... if you wish it of course!!

Don't suppose there is any way into Architecture if you haven't handed in a portfolio?

You can apply to transfer courses at any meeting of the Student Status Committee. The next one is June 30th. However, you will more than likely have to go back into first year of the course you wish to join and as such you will be liable for tuition fees.

A D1 is technically a fail but it can be carried so long as your QCA is above 2.0. If the grade you get in the summer exams is a F or NG, then you must repeat and pass it during the repeat period in August. If it is a D1 or D2, then you can carry it so long as your QCA is above 2.0, same as you did this semester. If you fail the repeat exam, then you will have to sit the module again next year on a link-in basis i.e. repeat just that module.

Apolgies for being pedantic Mossin but a D1 is a fail grade that can be carried, it is not a passing grade.

If a portfolio is required for entry then it is unlikely you can get in without it however the best advice would be to contact the course director for specific information like that.

Pretty much the same as my last response, if you get a N.G or F grade, you must repeat to clear it during the repeat exam period in August. If you don't then you will be required to repeat it next year as a link-in i.e. stand alone module if you want to continue with your course.

Not Entirely sure if this is where i should post this but ill give it a whack! So i got my registration fee paid by the council and they also gave me a grant. For Next year do i have to re-apply or will it just automatically like do it?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,351 ✭✭✭ninty9er

    That one's for me.

You will have to submit up to date documentation to your grant authority (council/VEC) to ensure you still fall within the means test criteria.

I'm fin fourth year and have handed up my fyp etc already. I got an email saying that an external examiner wants to meet up with me for an interview. I presume its something to do with my fyp.

What are the reasons that an external examiner would want interview a student?
