What is the best woodstain to paint Garden panelling?

Hi All, I will be painting my fence in the next week or so and i'm looking for the best product to paint my garden panels? Do i use wood stain or varnish or what do i use? All help appreciated, plus if there are any bargains out there please let me know. Cheers Moggie

All hardware shops and big sheds,bnq etc sell loads of different shades.Wood stain preserver,not varnish,unless you want a peeling look;) Keep the pics coming:)
