Which show followed Seinfeld?

...as the big-ratings US sitcom that featured an ensemble of flawed, bickering often-unlikeable characters?

If you go back far enough in time you had MASH at the top of the tree. Soon as that finished Cheers stepped into fill the hole. After that Seinfeld took the crown.

I suppose you could argue Frasier took the lead after Seinfelds conclusion but I've always thought of that as a different type of show. Sure the characters bickered constantly but there wasn't that misanthropic undercurrent that flowed thru the other three. Certainly I wouldn't have the same fondness for Frasier as I would for the aforementioned trio anyway.

Did I totally miss what happened in 1998 or did Friends really ruin it for all of us by changing the way sitcoms are made in the States?

Curb your enthusiasm is a pretty obvious answer I would have thought. Just from HBO rather than from one of the main networks.

As you pretty much said, Frasier took Seinfelds timeslot. Unlike you though, i think Frasier was an absolutely classic series.

I thought Frasier was the natural successor to Cheers (where Frasier was a character)?

Arrested Development should have been the heir to Seinfeld in terms of a successful, highly intelligent comedy but alas never attracted the ratings it deserved.
