i have done several scans and some virus were detected and i rebooted, and installed norton 2010, and now doing a new scan.. 2 cookies detected so far but my space is still vanishing.

driving me nuts. any idea guys?

i had nod32 installed and surprised that i even got a virus....

Download microsoft security essentials and run a full scan.

Disable nod beforehand as 2 anti virus/spy ware is not a good idea.

    What OS?

If its vista/7 then its fine, they do that routinely, its not a symptom of anything.

It could be a faulty drive?

Seen this type of thing before. PC was compromised, rootkit installed along with FTP server. Movies and games were uploaded to the host. Best option (if possible) is to remove the drive and do a scan from a known good clean system. Cleaning something like this is not fun or easy.

I've seen this happen a lot. Download WinDirStat and it will run a report and tell you where the space is been used.

Do you have any P2P programs installed?
