What is the point if you cannot use it on a SatNav like in the UK?

Your link doesn't have any info about a new Irish post code system not being compatible?

Looks like the one proposed by Government is not for SatNav's - have I picked it up wrong?

I'd say so. Postcodes are just a series of numbers and letters and ours will be no different. In any case I don't think that the final decision on how they will work has been made yet.
