Possibly the only main football correspondent on a national radio station in the world that doesn't attend games.

Shows too with his complete lack of understanding about the game. The off the ball faux guardian's fiver tripe grates after about 15 minutes.

He actually presented the guardian's football weekly podcast the last couple of days and was roundly criticised ion their forums etc.

But then most English football fans actually go to games

He was really bad on the Guardian podcast.

Ken Early is great. I love his witty remarks that have nothing to do with anything relevant and he is a red head. I love him a lot more than Murph or Hick

Yep, and it wasn't very good, imo.

    He's not a "presenter".

This is a warning to everyone in the thread. Please note that in the radio forum there is:
    No insulting other members.
No personal insulting of radio presenters, just criticism directed to their radio programme and their skills at producing that programme.

The Off the Ball show is brilliant - great way to pass the afternoon.

Early is not bad, he's not afraid to go with a controversial opinion. Even though half the time he's just ****stirring. At the same time his knowledge of football seems quite limited. The main presenter, Eoin something, seems to have a far better grasp of football, as well as most other sports,

I think Early is really there for the banter, more than anything else.

    Good show though.

I like the McDevitt & Early double act on Newstalk

I know they get distracted into strange tangents but I enjoy that.
But I just like listening to a couple of guys shooting the breeze on radio (non existant on Irish radio)

Last night was very funny though hearing Gabrielle Marcotti bristling at every question Ken asked him... it was unintentionaly very funny.

ps: for radio comedy I'm going to plug the two jacks

I used to love the show...I find the weekly Johnnie Giles slots and Ken Earlys newsround all bit done to death now at this stage.

I think they are struggling to keep it fresh now and are forcing the issue.

I have to say that I'm not a football fan or a sports fan in general but I really like listening to Off The Ball, Eoin McDevitt's energy and enthusiam works very well against Ken Earley's laid back I knew that was going happen attitude. I love the fact the presenters take the michael out of each other.

could be because ( while a living irish legend ) john giles is the dourest man on earth

Hah...partly Bob...but mainly (and this is a bit OT) but mainly because Giles (Legend that he is) basically comes on the show / RTE etc and just spouts the same old thing.
It used to be ok but "honesty of effort" and the likes just isn't the cutting analysis I am looking for anymore.

I like Giles's slot on Off The Ball, basically because he does't do bulls**t. Yes, he is repetitive.... but lets face it - so is football.

i like when graham hunter has a go at ken early...always funny. good show and well worth a listen. There's an honesty in them that you won't find anywhere else.

    Neither..:D

The lads are a breath of fresh air. Such a change from the staid, boring style from RTE. listening to them trying to be more 'off the ball' from 7 to half 7 is truly cringeowrthy...

you're bang on there - whether you like or loathe off the ball, there's no denying that RTE have noticed it.

Yep. I'm not going to have a go at Darragh Moloney because I think he's quite good but their attempted quips should be quelled.

Hmmmm Martin Johnson would run him close.

Cyclist Sean Kelly would have to be up there.
Not exactly Michael Barrymore. Tough as nails though.

You have a point. It is at its most blatant on Thursdays when RTE decided to put "Dunphy on football" on at same time as OTB's "Thursday night football with John Giles". All because OTB has become the most listened to radio shown in that time slot.

    "Dunphy on football" .

Is that what they call the slot...? Oh dear...:(

Thing is what can RTE do. Because they're restrained by their 'Public service' remit(which means playing diddlee-eye at every opportunity) they're never going to be able to be a real contender for the OTB audience so why bother in the first place...?

the competition Authority really needs to look into RTE

..... dont ask me, I was flicking around and tuned into 2fm Saturday 2 weeks ago, they actually have started a program called 'ballbusters'

    http://2fm.rte.ie/ballbusters

it is pathetic, the ad lib sucks, the presenters are very, very bad

they seem to do a rehash of what Off the Ball covers during the week, an example being this : http://2fm.rte.ie/blogs/ballbusters/2010/01/mad-italian-commentator---juve-v-roma.html

I object to my TV license money being pooled to generate crap like this

This is a fine example of how TALENTLESS RTE actually is.

RTE hang your heads in shame

(in effect, my point is that my TV license money is used to try and drown out or specifically compete with anything that hits RTEs ratings)
