    The Football Show starts up again on Monday night. Good to have him back, Coleman At Large was a piss poor substitute.

    Knows his stuff. Funny. Doesn't seem to like Gaelic football.
    Sound :D
    It's always a good source of banter. Eoin might ask Ken did he watch the hurling and Ken would list names of players he has heard of.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

    Certainly dont always agree with him but it's a very entertaining show... Seem like the sort of guys you'd meet in the pub for a pint. Ken is the good straight man for Eoin's comedy... That spot where they had the intro for Ken last year, which became increasingly longer every day, used to have me in tears.. Or the bits where they play back Joe Duffy's fuk ups.. (despite the fact that Joe is usually very complimentary of them)

    I would have put that the other way around.

    ah no, I was thinking about it, Ken is always making "profound" subjective statements, and Eoin usually interjects with something facetious or funny... Ken certainly does contribute... I think the reason that the show is so enjoyable is that the show is not stuffy like most of RTE sport on the radio...
    Plus it doesnt have Des Cahill's stupid tribal "jokes" and in-jokes..

    For me, it doesn't really matter if Eoin or Ger Gilroy is presenting the show, Ken is the person I tune in to hear. Anyway, its just a matter of opinion.

    Though I definitely agree with this bit.

    You are perfectly entitled to express that view.

    Agree the the Cahill 'ABU' stuff and the 'banter' on the GAA side of things is stupid in the extreme.

    However Early ,in my opinion, is a jerk who got lucky and has garnered an audience of, well, a certain bunch of ignorant fcukers who think the world begins and ends around the English Premiership

    Sorry for being so blunt but that's the the way it rolls in my opinion.

    As are you perfectly entitled to yours, maybe you have expressed it a bit too bluntly for this forum - but thats not for me to decide.

    I guess that makes me one of the ignorant fcukers who think the world begins and ends around the English Premiershio...ah well, i can live with that.

    Folks keep it on topic without abusing presenters or using abusive language keep the discussion clean and to the point

    Hmmm. kind of veiled comment there Mr. R.

    Early is jerk of mammoth proportions ,in my opinion.

    Panders to the stereotype who lives eats and breaths the English prem.

    Slug like punters who take everything said on radio as Gospel.

    Wouldn't entertain such people myself.

    That's just me though, not easily duped:cool:

    Ken also does a nifty job when filling in for Fionn Davenport on Culture Shock. (A better job imo).

    Off the Ball is the best sports programme on radio by a mile and a lot of this is due to the irreverent rapport amongst the presenters.
    Most of the humour is generated by Murph, who imo is a priceless member of the team.

    Veiled? Not really. I have no real interest rugby, gaa, hurling, Airtricty League...etc - but I do support an EPL team and the national side. And I happen to like Ken Early's Football Show, Kevin Richardson's Gaurdian podcast and 5 live sport.

    Why?

    Am I not entitled to an opinion.

    This guy is the greatest con-artist ever invented.

    Bigged up by his peers but no substance, none whatsoever.

    You do realise that he’s their “football correspondent” don’t you? – ie doing a journalistic job, as opposed to a pundit like Cascarino or Lawerenson coming on and giving expert/ bleeding obvious predictions like that Man Utd will beat Wolves etc

    Assuming that’s established, what exactly do you expect from an on air correspondent?

    His role is essentially to:

    - read the day’s news for half of his hour slot and spend the other half interviewing Hunter, Vickery, Wilson etc;
    - hang out at the Ireland training camps, ask the odd question at press conferences and report live from the matches;
    - attend WC/ Euros every 2 years and send back reports/ interviews etc;

    This is all he does. Ok, he approaches the subject with a humorous slant, but he doesn’t spoof, and I can’t see where you got the idea that he is put forward as a person of “substance”.

    Flut – your attitude to Ken Early’s comedy calls to mind the terminally un-funny Army DJ in Good Morning Vietnam who was replaced by the Robin Williams character. Who would you prefer as the Football Show presenter? – Ken Early or Stephen Hawking

    Thank you for your input.

    As this is a 'Ken Early Appreciation Thread' and as is obvious, I don't appreciate his broadcasting style, regretfully, I cannot take part in this thread.

    Thank you, and have a good day.

    When it comes to sports, off the ball is the best thing going in this country in any form of media. The variety of sports covered, the depth they go into and the guests they get are all second to none and better than any of their competitors. They have been going for a long time, have a great format and still manage to keep it sounding fresh and engaging.

    Ken is a great part of that dynamic, they use his personality and complete lack of knowledge about certain sports to good, usually comic, effect. One of the strengths of the show is its irreverence and Ken is certainly irreverent.

    Aside from all that he really knows his football.

    yeah I love it still as well.. They seem to have nailed the right mix of humour and sport, with presenters that are subtly funny without being irritating... I think RTE sport tried to do with with Jacqui Hurley and Con Murphy on Sunday Sport but it just sounded like an unprofessional mess.. That intro music for Ken Earley still has me in tears every time..

    Anyone hear his translation of Vladimir Putin's reaction to the awarding of the World Cup to Russia? Hilarious stuff.

    Hope it's ok to revive this but no point in starting a new thread on him....

    anyway, another big fan of Ken here. I was an avid off the ball fan since it's inception with G.Gilroy.
    For me, the whole show has peaked and has become somewhat stale, apart from the segments Ken is involved in. Bearing in mind I've become completely disillusioned with soccer, particularly the soap opera that is the premier league, I really think his talents are wasted on the show now and for me, and my minuscule opinion, he, or the management, should look at giving him his own show.

    From listening to the show for so long, it's clear he has a wide knowledge and valuable opinion of world issues, history, current affairs and obviously soccer. He might have no interest in a show of his own, or even leaving the off the ball team, but I can't help but think he could create a new show that would inevitably build it's own unique large following and put an even bigger smile on Mr.O'Briens face.

    Anyway rant over...I saw this video last night and thought about my own disillusionment with the premier league and how I wasted so much time and energy on it.
