But in order to predict which route is faster (travelator or walking) one must do at least a little ressearch.

Actually an escalator is not the same as a stairs the size of the “step” is actually bigger then a standard stair so you could not build a stairs to the same size under building regulations because the height of the step is too high. In reality you shouldn’t be walking up the escalators because this is not actually what they are designed for. :p

I think I made the same point.

In America they have a system in which people go in lines and you have to let people pass to avoid frustation.

...Note - I do NOT suggest we americanise Ireland.

What's there to elaborate on? what you're saying is completely ridiculous as a reason for this.

Obviously if I knew why what I said was ridiculous, then I would not need you to elaborate.
That's not what elaborate means though, so maybe you just confused the other person. Or they had better things to do...

What do you mean that's not what elaborate means? I wanted stupidusername to tell me why what i said was rubbish. I wanted him to expand on his comment. To add more details to his post. How is that confusing?

I was trying to think of an explanation for why this is a crazy theory, but I actually couldn't come up with an explanation. I don't know what to say. I ran this by someone else, and as he read your explanation he laughed also. I asked how could I explain why this theory is mental (but funny) and he said give up. so i do. Just don't know how someone could come up with an explanation like that.

Can you name one thing that's wrong with my theory? Just one thing?

I was confused, as like I said I don't know how to explain why that doesn't make sense. But also I had other things to do. Thanks for backing me up brianthebard, good to know at least two other people get it

What doesn't make sense? Your standing on something that's moving. Its natural to want to hold onto something. So you use your right hand to hold the hand rail, which means you are standing on the right hand side of the escalator. Can anyone tell me why my theory is crazy???

I never stand to the side of an escalator because when I was younger I got seriously injured by doing that. I couldn't give two shits if you want to get past me, wait 30 seconds ffs

You'll get far more injured in London or Paris with that attitude.

Its kinda equivalent to a Granny driving 60kph in the overtaking lane of a motorway while the inside lane is empty.

I don't live in London or Paris though, and I doubt I'd be more injured tbh.

Spot on Syklops I'm with you on that one.

Latin past part. of Elaboratus ....Elaborare to work out.

    laborare : to work.

What you were basically asking was to "do more work on that" in other words add to what you said.

Can't see nowt wrong with your presentation or theory sunshine.

    Sweet fook all.

    Neither do I.
But in the limited time I've spent in the cities, in Paris I have seen a woman shoved to the side and roared at (by another woman) for standing on the left and in London I've seen a few people barged through for standing side by side.

Its simple common courtesy to be honest to stand at the side and let others by.

I have to say that i never even heard of this till i joined boards. everyone i know would simply get on the escalator and stand still till they reached the top or bottom. Of course the only ones i have seen are far too narrow to pass someone on so maybe thats why i never heard of stand right walk left (or whichever you prefer)

on the other hand i automatically assumed that while on a travelator or autowalk you would keep walking as they are wide enough to allow you to pass.

I hereby apoligise to anyone i have held up or delayed for the 30 seconds it takes to get to the top or bottom and i hope that you havent wasted another 30 seconds of your life reading this post. in the future may i humbly suggest using the stairs as a way to get there faster while at the same time providing an outlet for your suppressed anger/emotional problems.

    :D

(takes escalator to next thread while being carefull to keep walking )

What gets me about those autowalks/travelators is when I'm walking up to one that is switched off and I can see as I'm getting there that it's switched off but as I reach it I automatically take that little extra speedy/long step and do a little stumble before continuing on as if nothing happened, mustering as much dignity as I can.
Then I do the exact same thing when I get to the other end.

I lived in London for 5 years and saw loads of people standing on the wrong side the worst anyone ever got was someone saying excuse me. So your statement is bull****.

I like the flat autowalks in some airports, especially in big corridors with windows. The motion and view makes me think I'm heading to work in a Utopian space city of the future.

I also like the weird feeling you get when you walk up or down a stopped escalator. There's a disconcerting lethargy in the legs like they don't want to move.

You said my theory on why people started walking on the right on escalators was bullsh1t and ridiculous, and that you and your friend found it hilarious.

All I want is to find out why you think it is ridiculous. Just 1 example will do.

My first ever job - in Tesco (well, Quinnsworth to be precise :o) - involved helping people push their trolleys over the last hurdle of the flat escalator thingie, which was known as the "travelator". I had to regularly walk down the ascending travelator (on instruction) which was probably a serious breach of health and safety. Very dizzying and disorientating the first few times, but I got used to it.

It's two keys up from 'Ctrl' after the up arrow?

    Is that what you want?

The unwritten rule across all of Europe is stand on the right. Why us Irish have to be different and stand all over the shop is beyond me.
yup, find that very strange as well. people here just love to do the opposite way of everything:confused:

How much time went into your theory? I think the reason that people stand on one side and walk on the other is simply because some people don't want to stand and wait, they prefer to walk and get to their destination quicker.

One might ask "Why don't they take the stairs then?"..
Sometimes the escalator is the more direct route. Especially in the London underground, where many staircases run round corners and are quite steep, so walking fast is very difficult.

Also, I think your theory is flawed if, as you say, the main reason behind making people stand on the right is safety. First of all, the hand rail thing on escalators isn't too good for grabbing onto in the event of a sudden stop, it's more for balancing yourself as you travel along. Second, I think if safety was the main concern, then there would be a 'No walking' rule instead of a 'save the right-handed people who are standing and fúck everyone else' idea.

It was never about making people stand on the right. I was interested in the fact that every country I have been to(first world, third world and everything in between) that had escalators, everyone stood on the right. My theory for this was that it feels more natural for people, the majority of which are right handed, to put their right and dominant hand on the rail. I agree it is more for balancing yourself as you go along.

All I wanted was a semi-intelligent reply. Stupidusername told me it was hilarious, ridiculous and bullsh/t, and but was unable to tell me why he thought so.

Thank you for taking the time to come up with a flaw in said theory.

    What's wrong with some people!
I would like to add the annoyance I experience daily on regular footpaths; nearly everyone using them are walking at a leisurely pace, dont these silly people know im in a rush, why cant people run on them like me!
It gets you to your destination much quicker

Your use of rolleyes suggests that you dispute your own assertion and that in fact, walking at a snail's pace is your preferred perambulatory speed.

    I'm confused.

You obviously haven't been to many places. It's basically worldwide etiquette to stand on the right, walk on the left. It's only in Ireland that people stand 2 abreast, oblivious to everyone else.

A lot of people just don't have time to just stand there like sheep. You say sarcastically that you're sorry if you hold people up by 30 seconds - well don't you think that's rather selfish? What gives you the right to take up someone else's time because you couldn't be bothered to be courteous? 'Only' 30 seconds could be the difference between catching and missing a train. Nothing more annoying than ending up late because some gobsh1te was in your way. Also, I take about a dozen escalators every day on the Underground. Having to stand rather than walk on each one would add a good 7 or 8 minutes to my commute each way. Why waste time? I really would love to have a mallet and bop people on the head with it for standing in the way. :p
