Easy 5 miles on the threadmill today 7.25 min mile pace. Found it boring. 49 mile week and it was a taper one. Sundays 20 bulked it up.

Ran 62.30 today but it was the worst race of my life. A pb but i feel I have come on alot since last march.
I wore my heart rate monitor today for a change as i wanted to see what the figures would be.
Woke up this morning with stomach cramps etc but i thought it might be nerves.
Tactically i ran a great race. Had planned to go through halfway in 30 min. Went thru 2 miles in 11.53 and after that I failed to run a 6 min mile. Halfway in 30.12 and I was feiced(9.5 out of 10 on the feiced level) This shouldnt have been the case. I have trained really well lost a few ibs. Even the downhill mile I could only manage a 6.30. Three reasons I didnt stop
I had to post the fu88in time on boards(made me stay going)
Was in front of a club runner who wanted to beat me and didnt(so was worth staying going)
    and 3 cos i aint a quitter. I am a WINNER.

Got back to the car and had a look at my HRM and wasnt suprised when I saw the results.
    HRM for the race was
    175
    176
    175
    177
    178
    178
    174
    173
    173
    172

My heart rate should have been sub 155 for the first two miles anyway. If i had ran 59.50 I wouldnt have been half as motivated as I am now for the nxt month. Got plenty of sneering/friendly banter and lads even said i was training wrong. Got the comment that more wasnt always better than less.
I did ease of for the last 4 miles but htat was because I had nothing left.

The mistake wasnt racing it. The mistake i made was horsing into sambos brack and choc chip buns. Left them in the woods somewhere on the way home. Stomach was so bad I missed the 2nd half of the utd match and went to bed.

Just shows its all on the day and sosa we will have another crack at the Dungarvan 10km.
Your nxt log will be sub 2.50 and not sub 3. Well Done.

Disapppointed YES but its only a 10 miler and I will be grand by nxt weekend. Showed bottle to keep going.

sounds like you definetly had some sort of stomach virus...there is something going around...I had it 2 weeks ago which took me out for 24hours and my brother had it on friday....the fact that you had such a high heart rate in the first mile means you definetly had an infection...on a normal day you find it tough to break into the 170's after only 1 mile. forget about it, bad luck, theres nothing wrong with your training.

I heard your name called out after me and I was wondering what the f**k happened there, was thinking you must have pulled a muscle or something so glad to here its something that'll pass in a day and you'll be straight back into the training. Fair play for finishing.

Sounds like one tough day at office, that heart rate is way off, if you normally would see 15x...as lads say, you'll be back in no time.

    impressive log village runner.

    Thanks lads.
Maybe it was downc to my own stupidness.
Yes it could have been worse. Will run mallow sunday although its unlikely i will race it. But stranger things have happened eh. But effort level was a 10 today.

Its runs like this that makes one appreciate the great result when it happens. It shows that things do happen which can interupt best made plans. You're training performance shows what you are made of. An offday today which will be forgotten about very shortly.

Bad luck luck VR. Anyone who reads your log will know that your time yesterday doesn't reflect the recent training you have done. As others have said, it was just a bad day at the office. Better now than April. Refocus on the big target and off you go again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,523 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Unlucky VR, and not what you deserved. Remember this race. Bottle the anger and frustration. Keep it safe for April. Unleash hell. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Abhainn

Heh VR - you've put in a hard few weeks of training. It just wasn't going to happen on the day. Forget about it as I'm sure its just a blip.

Great to see you didn't stop. That will stand to you.

Hey VR chin up mate. You got a pb but feel a bit demoralised that the real target didn't materialise. It was just a tough day for you, where clearly a bunch of things came to a head. It can happen when you are solely focused on a target hence the disappointment of not getting exactly that in what was otherwise a decent run anyway. You were on shcedule for half of it and it was gutsy of you to finish it out. Kudos and forward now :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭heffsarmy

Fair play for finishing off the run, bad day at the office for you. We all know your strong minded with those mammoth sessions you done on the thread mill, you will be back to fight another day, chin up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,285 ✭✭✭Speedy44

Try to put it behind you VR, you've still done all the work so thats in the bank. You'll have it on another day.
After I bombed in Dublin (and I'm still not sure what went wrong!) I was pissed off for ages, but now I feel like I am in a lot better shape and looking forward to each new challange, and if I have a bad one, well, I'll still have a beer afterwards.

Thanks for all the kind words. When bad things happen they come in pairs.
Thats why i dont follow a programme. Always like getting long ones in early in case of injury/sickness.

On antibiotics for 7 days to clear an infection. Had root canal treatment done 3-4 weeks prior to Berlin and the root should should have been dead. Taking the f***ing thing out nxt wednesday. She wants to root the other one(more expensive so I am in for a few nice weeks ahead. god i love the dentist.

So what do people do when on Antibiotics ??
Stop altogether or do a bit with low heart rate.

Today was 8 miles at 7.30 pace. Tried garmin indoor today. Has anyone ever tried it ?? HR seemed about right. Mostly at 130 odd...............
I know i have the miles done. Will do a long run nxt wednesday beofre the treatment so not too worried about losing fitness.

Had planned to run mallow at tempo pace. Views ??

Skip it. do an easy run on the treadmill instead. You'll gain nothing by driving all the way to Mallow other than picking up swine flu or something else.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me.
I would give it a miss

Didnt to a tap all week and got really frustrated. Couldnt even go for a run wednesday. Toothache was worse than any marathon i ran. Sheer hell. Rang dentist thursday am and said i wanted it out. Took me in and out it came. Ponston didnt work on the tuesday/wednesday so got really strong ones thursday. Never knew a little tooth would leave the body zapped.

Today i ran thge 10 miler in mallow as had promised others a lift.
Finished in 67.30 and it felt toughish without been over exertive. Hope by tuesday wednesday to be back in full swing. 6 days would get me 2 long runs and get the confidence back up. Nearly there so dont want to push too soon.

Decided on a mp run every week for the nxt month the day before my long one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,209 ✭✭✭Sosa

    Good that your back VR.

When you say you are doing a pmp the day before a long...why is that ?
To keep the long run at a slower pace or just for endurance and how many at pmp will you do ?
Just wondering,i decided myself before christmas that i would do at least 10m @ sub 6:50p every week, because that was one of my biggest failings in prep for Dublin.
The last 2 weeks i have done 12 @ sub 6:45 and got through them ok.

    Hi Guys,

I've always been an advocate of the hard/easy rule, but lately I've for one reason or another I've been doing some kind of a hard session the day before or the day after my long run. I've rationalised it as the long run isn't 'marathon' long as in 18mls+, so 13 or 14mls at a comfortable pace wouldn't really take too much out of me

    So far so good ......................

Big sympathy of the tooth thing. Isn't it funny how something so damn small can be so crippling ................

The reason sosa its the only day i can fit it in. normal week with no race from now on is
Either monday wednesday or friday off depending on how i feel.
Leaves a 5-6 mile tempo on a tuesday totally 10 miles ish
    Interval thursday
    PMP run on sat
    Long run sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,523 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

The Hal Higdon marathon plans all have you doing a pmp pace run on the Saturday, followed by the long run on the Sunday. It definitely builds endurance and mental strength, as the long runs become much tougher to get through, but your long run definitely suffers because of it.

Good to see you back VR, and glad it's not an injury that'll scupper the plans.

    am
10 miles at 6.50 pace. Yesterdays race/run had no effect. Pace didnt feel comfy but still on antibiotics so what do you expect. Twas fast enough. Will wait till thursday to run faster stuff.

Afternoon 90 min easy on the spinning bike and 30 min core work.

Want to get back up the milage this week. Hope to do a long one tomorrow. Will decide after 10 if i continue or not.

Today a leisurely 20. Done the first 10 on my own 7.07 pace. Joined a lad for the 2nd 10 and didnt want to burn him so 2nd 10 was what felt like a slow 7.27(which give me great confidence of what lies ahead)
I normally run the long ones slow but throw in a few faST ones sunday if i can.

I even done 20 minutes after it. Flexibility is very poor and if i could improve that drop a few ibs i can run 2.50(now for a donut and cup of tea)
If you dont deserve it after 20 you never do. 20 is now feeling like a walk in the park. Hope to do a 24 sunday but we will see.

Excellent running VR. Nice to see your over the bug you had. Just over the flu myself, its amazing how much it can take out of you.

August September 07 i was doing them at 8.50 pace. Last year i ran most of my long ones at 8 min mile pace. Practice Practice Practice.I run them at a pace that i can run hard two days later. I could have ran today at 6.40 pace but it would screw up my nxt two weeks. However at end of march i will run 21 at 6.25 pace and see how i feel. Wont have ran hard previous 7 days. I will then know how i am fixed.

In june i only done a half in 1.23 so its a big ask. For some reason I thought 6.25s was the equivalent to 2.50 but only realised today it was 6.30s. Now i am getting even more confident. 11 weeks to go with alot of 20s under my belt(all at least 45 seconds slower than pmp) so i am in great shape. Time will tell.

Today a recovery 10 miles in 75 minutes in hte morning. Plenty of stretching before and after(time consuming aint it)

After 3pm one of the kids fell asleep so i went off to do 32 miles on the bike at 17.5mph. Thank God for sleeping tablets. Always makes her sleep.
