it ISN'T happening! As far as the college is concerned there is NO rag week this year. There will be no concessions as far as days off or lectures cancelled. I have even heard that some lecturers are going to run assessments that week.

Pardon my french, but you're talking shíte!

The Student Union are running a competition for someone to come up with this years theme for Rag Week. Taken from GMIT SU's Facebook page:
Hey guys, the time of year is upon us when rag week is on the way, last year rag weeks theme was a glass and a half full of joy,if anyone can come up with a theme for this years campaign,if that theme or slogan is used the person gets a free rag week pass, get thinking and mail us.

That doesnt mean there is an official RAG week - the two colleges in Galway agreed that there would be no 2010 RAG week given last yrs disgraceful shenagans. It will be a normal week in the academic calender - no concession days and no lectures cancelled. The SU will come under pressure to run NO EVENTS that disrupt attendance at lectures.

Only NUIG said there would be no college sponsored events this year and would be no official RAG week. They're having something called 'college week' instead on the first week in March.

GMIT never said anything about canceling RAG week, of course if you can find an article or something to prove otherwise...

GMIT - 22nd February. It's not RAG week by definition. There will be an emphasis on the charity side of things and yes there will be events.

That should answer your question - NO CONCESSION days as GMIT wont be recognising RAG week or whatever is called or organised, lectures as normal - no concessions.

Did we really get 2 days off last year?! Do you go to the college? Why are you so adamant that rag week isn't being recognised? Are you confusing us with NUIG?

Yes the Thurs and the Fri, or were u too drunk/hungover to notice?

The SU is getting no concession days nor financial contribution to the week or any concession days off - lectures as normal. While the SU may organise events itself - none will be on campus and none will be recognised by the college. So oficially as far as the college management is concerned RAG week isnt happening.

so nuig has all their events on campus to stop rag week being like last year and gmit does the opposite..thats really weird..

Are you College management so? What's wrong with ya?? Rag Week is happening, so deal with it.

RAG week is NOT happening - I can assure you. The name of GMIT CANNOT be associated with ANY event as it does not have OFFICIAL sanction!!

Deal with that and accept facts!

Facts based on what? Your claim that you've spoken to management and your "assurances"?

NUIG have college week this year, and have confirmed that The Corona's, Calvin Harris and Neil Delamere will be the main acts. GMIT will be making its announcement next week.

Considering (and I'm not trying to cause trouble here), that out of the 40 or so students arrested during rag week last year, only 1 was from GMIT, and NUIG are still going ahead with college week, its a very safe bet that GMIT will go ahead with RAG wekk, or whatever name it will be given.

Isn't there a big poster for RAG week in the canteen? Looks like it's going ahead for me. Sure it's the time for all the little 1st years to go out drinking without Mammy and Daddy, get all the rage out, enjoy a trip to the barracks, all valuable life lessons. :P

How true. Of course if ppl ACTUALLY READ the posts they would have noticed that I said there was NO OFFICIAL RAG WEEK, which means no recognition by the college. The Mgmt cant stop events but NOTHING will be held on campus nor will there be any concesssionary days off. How many times do I have to post this? Says a lot re your short term memory! Yes it was the Registrar himself who told me no OFFICIAL RAG week - this is also the case at NUIG. The various SUs may put up posters but I repeat THERE IS NO OFFICIAL RAG week 2010. While 40 odd students may have been arrested last year hundreds more caused mayhem across the city - west and east. Swarming crowds outside clubs in city centre at 3.00 pm in the afternoon was an unedifying spectacle enough in itself but it was the antics of a sizeable number that caused such outrage and wasted the valuable time of the Gardaí who have much more serious matters to which they could devote their time and energy than a bunch of unruly, drunk students.
