it ISN'T happening! As far as the college is concerned there is NO rag week this year. There will be no concessions as far as days off or lectures cancelled. I have even heard that some lecturers are going to run assessments that week.

Pardon my french, but you're talking shíte!

The Student Union are running a competition for someone to come up with this years theme for Rag Week. Taken from GMIT SU's Facebook page:
Hey guys, the time of year is upon us when rag week is on the way, last year rag weeks theme was a glass and a half full of joy,if anyone can come up with a theme for this years campaign,if that theme or slogan is used the person gets a free rag week pass, get thinking and mail us.

That doesnt mean there is an official RAG week - the two colleges in Galway agreed that there would be no 2010 RAG week given last yrs disgraceful shenagans. It will be a normal week in the academic calender - no concession days and no lectures cancelled. The SU will come under pressure to run NO EVENTS that disrupt attendance at lectures.

Only NUIG said there would be no college sponsored events this year and would be no official RAG week. They're having something called 'college week' instead on the first week in March.

GMIT never said anything about canceling RAG week, of course if you can find an article or something to prove otherwise...

GMIT - 22nd February. It's not RAG week by definition. There will be an emphasis on the charity side of things and yes there will be events.

That should answer your question - NO CONCESSION days as GMIT wont be recognising RAG week or whatever is called or organised, lectures as normal - no concessions.

Did we really get 2 days off last year?! Do you go to the college? Why are you so adamant that rag week isn't being recognised? Are you confusing us with NUIG?

Yes the Thurs and the Fri, or were u too drunk/hungover to notice?

The SU is getting no concession days nor financial contribution to the week or any concession days off - lectures as normal. While the SU may organise events itself - none will be on campus and none will be recognised by the college. So oficially as far as the college management is concerned RAG week isnt happening.

so nuig has all their events on campus to stop rag week being like last year and gmit does the opposite..thats really weird..

RAG week is NOT happening - I can assure you. The name of GMIT CANNOT be associated with ANY event as it does not have OFFICIAL sanction!!

Deal with that and accept facts!

Facts based on what? Your claim that you've spoken to management and your "assurances"?

NUIG have college week this year, and have confirmed that The Corona's, Calvin Harris and Neil Delamere will be the main acts. GMIT will be making its announcement next week.

Considering (and I'm not trying to cause trouble here), that out of the 40 or so students arrested during rag week last year, only 1 was from GMIT, and NUIG are still going ahead with college week, its a very safe bet that GMIT will go ahead with RAG wekk, or whatever name it will be given.

Isn't there a big poster for RAG week in the canteen? Looks like it's going ahead for me. Sure it's the time for all the little 1st years to go out drinking without Mammy and Daddy, get all the rage out, enjoy a trip to the barracks, all valuable life lessons. :P

How true. Of course if ppl ACTUALLY READ the posts they would have noticed that I said there was NO OFFICIAL RAG WEEK, which means no recognition by the college. The Mgmt cant stop events but NOTHING will be held on campus nor will there be any concesssionary days off. How many times do I have to post this? Says a lot re your short term memory! Yes it was the Registrar himself who told me no OFFICIAL RAG week - this is also the case at NUIG. The various SUs may put up posters but I repeat THERE IS NO OFFICIAL RAG week 2010. While 40 odd students may have been arrested last year hundreds more caused mayhem across the city - west and east. Swarming crowds outside clubs in city centre at 3.00 pm in the afternoon was an unedifying spectacle enough in itself but it was the antics of a sizeable number that caused such outrage and wasted the valuable time of the Gardaí who have much more serious matters to which they could devote their time and energy than a bunch of unruly, drunk students.

Why not post it one more time for us mate? Fact is, recognised or not, its going ahead.

Most colleges never recognised RAG week. In GMIT the only days that were allocated for it were the thursday and friday of whatver week it was held on, the rest of the time normal lectures were held. And even in that case most lecturers said that if no one turned up, so be it. Its no skin off their nose if no one turns up.

Regarding the last part i've highlighted in bold: Finally you show your colours. All along from reading your posts I figured you may be a GMIT student who was just strongly defending some information they had received, now I just see someone who's totally against the idea of RAG week and quite frankly, you come across as a bit of a killjoy.

Personally, I, nor any one of my mates caused any hassle during RAG week in years past. The majority of students dont. If a few people want to cause hassle then thats their problem, they'll be arrested and they'll end up looking like fools.

Like it or not, RAG week is an important part of the college experience.

    Enjoy it everyone.

    Well
    1. I am not your MATE (thankfully).
    2. I did NOT accuse YOU of engaging in any 'hassle'.
    3. Missing lectures due to a drink fuelled 'charity' week, when the Semester system and exams before Christmas have already lead to a reduction in teaching time, seems eminently part of the 'college experience'.
    4. This week lectures are scheduled all week and will take place, regardless, even some assessments.
    5. I never said events were not happening, but rather that there is NO OFFICIAL RAG week.
    6. Just call it Piss head week and be done with it, sure what does it matter.
    7. I have no objection to people enjoying themselves - indeed I dont go round making uninformed judgements about people's sociability.
    8. I am looking forward to the virtual certainty that there will be trouble with the inevitable media exposure and bad press with SU leaders going on air bleating they are powerless to do very much.
9.Conform to the student stereotype or be damned! Isnt that your motto?

    1. I am not your MATE (thankfully)

Wow, charming. Good luck with that attitude.
    2. I did NOT accuse YOU of engaging in any 'hassle'.

True, however you did make sweeping generalisations about GMIT students, which are completely untrue.
    3. Missing lectures due to a drink fuelled 'charity' week, when the Semester system and exams before Christmas have already lead to a reduction in teaching time, seems eminently part of the 'college experience'

If you have a problem with exams before Christmas, take it up with the college. Also if you have a problem with the reduction in teaching time, take it up with the Dept. of Education and maybe the Minister for Finance. People who have exams after Christmas will be happy with a week to unwind.
    4. This week lectures are scheduled all week and will take place, regardless, even some assessments.

That has always been the way. However if you enjoy going to lectures where 3 people turn up and the lecturer cancels them, by all means.
    5. I never said events were not happening, but rather that there is NO OFFICIAL RAG week.

Which had NOTHING to do with the initial topic.
    6. Just call it Piss head week and be done with it, sure what does it matter.

Again with the stereotyping. Actually, thats a good idea, it would be the fastest selling RAG week t-shirt ever. Pitch that to the SU.
    7. I have no objection to people enjoying themselves - indeed I dont go round making uninformed judgements about people's sociability.

You'd just rather moan about it on the internet.
    8. I am looking forward to the virtual certainty that there will be trouble with the inevitable media exposure and bad press with SU leaders going on air bleating they are powerless to do very much

And i'm sure you'll be back on here to say "I told you so". The fact is the media have to report something if there's a slow news day, sure everyone loves a "look at the state of the youth of today" story don't they?
9.Conform to the student stereotype or be damned! Isnt that your motto?

My motto is Carpe Diem. Considering you'll be spending the week in the college/library, I suggest you find out what that means.

You're the one doing the stereotyping on this thread. Whether you want to conform to the stereotype you portray is your choice. Why not actually go and raise some money for charity, go to the gigs and events organised perhaps?

I realise this has gone wildly off topic (apologies to the mods), however your condescending, "holier than thou" attitude that comes across in your posts has been quite irritating, when all that was asked initially was for some info. on what was happening for the week.

With that, I hope you enjoy a week of cancelled lectures, an empty canteen and library, and having to trudge back to your accommodation while walking past people enjoying a brilliant part of the college year.

Yeah, it really doesnt fit does it?

Its about time they brought in the wristband system, its been working very well in UL for years. €50 isn't bad considering it covers all the events.

Still though, Tinchy Stryder. Suppose it'll do alot better than Aslan did 2 years ago!

NO OFFICIAL RAG WEEK, which means no recognition by the college

Well they're doing a great job of not recognising it by allowing a thirty foot poster to be put up in the canteen? I don't even like RAG week ( hate it infact ) but I'm just wondering why there are still obvious promotions on the I.T's grounds when the college aren't even recognising it this year.

This is a nasty, vindictive and personalised attack in the form of a reply. Its going to be brought to the moderators' attention not just of this board but of boards.ie. The vicious, sarcastic and vitriolic nature of the repost is totally uncalled for, and sadly typies what seems to be your despotic attitude to debate. Un Duce, una voce.

Fortunately, it was a quiet week, and successful, but you are far from the liberal student you portray yourself to be, as you clearly cannot stomach dissent. The world would be a very boring place if we were all like you - and conformed.

I hope you followed this week's news feature on grade inflation.

We await to see if next week will be equally as quiet.
