Bit of a random question here... but does your UID number mean anything as to the number of applicants so far? I know the first 4 numbers of it are the campaign but would the last numbers be what applicant number you are? Just wondering really out of pure nosiness because will be interesting to see how manys in for it this year as they don't really seem to be advertising this campaign as much.

There were actually just under 10,000 who applied last year, 9825 to be precise!

Interesting paper, was posted on one of the other threads:

hi. This is my first time sittin the ist and to be honest..i'm a bit scared! Do you have to score certain marks on each paper or can you score better on one paper..worse on the other but still pass?

As far as I know the latter applies ,i.e. do lousy on one but much better on the other then you can still pass.

And is there at least a certain mark to be aiming for? i know to do my best but still...

For the last campaign the pass mark was 55/70 , the campaign before was 52/70 - while one can only speculate on the pass mark for this campaign my own opinion is that it is probably unlikely to be below at least 55 and perhaps even up to 57 - again I stress that is pure speculation.

Hi all, I'm 18 years old and was just wandering is it possible that if you are successful in your application to defer until completion of your degree?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 hereshoping

IST Test Date is in - looking forward to getting it over with.

When does your degree finish? If its within the next few months you should apply - if its another few years then you cannot defer. If you are successful and get offered a date you may be able to put your class back a month or so if there are exceptional circumstances but thats it.

There have been lots of people who have deferred entry on here but thats only been by a few months or so! dont think they would allow you to defer for a full 3 years because of certain issues. For example you would not be offered a place until after medicals and vetting were complete but they would have to do them again in 3 years time which costs money!

    Anybody see this article?

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0129/breaking65.htm

Seems the numbers along for the ride this year isn't going to be that much lower than last year if there over 5000 in for it in 2 weeks...here's me thinking maybe we'll all be in with a better chance because there'd be less up for it after the recent attacks.

And only 219 places appointed from last years campaign? I thought it was always 440??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8 patientlywaitin

I think its only 219 places filled so far, as far as I can judge from other threads, many like me are at the waiting stage for c15 which began March 09

just reading the other forums and there a lot of folks talking about their merit score for non rc and rc.... can someone explain these merit scores to me? The better the score the more likely you are to get in? So if intake is 440 and you have a merit score above 220 in each group is that a good sign?

when you pass the AC, you will get a score, the RC's and nonRC's are put into 2 separate lists in order of the performance on the AC. some people will score the same mark as other, ie 18 people may all score 61, so the 18 people are then put into rank order of IST result. this then forms the merit list, number 1 being the person with the highest score. the top 220 are taken from each list but some people drop out, fail vetting/med etc so the ones further on down the merit lists past 220 are still in with a chance.

re-read that and it sound complicated to me  does it make sense to you?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 hereshoping

Yip that makes sense - so women and men will all be ranked in the same order based on how they did. Are so many women accepted or is it purely merit based on how they competed with the men in the AC/IST

they are marked purely on performance, women and RC's are encouraged to apply but you wont get scored any higher at all.

go to page 30 in this document, gives figues for male female break down but unfortunatly its quite out of date!

Is it just me or the more threads you read do you become a lot more nervous about the whole thing? I'm working through the tests in the hope that I can score high enough to get through this round. Would anyone from previous campaigns think IST is hardest/Easiest Stage??

Thats the reality of it kicking in...

I personally think the assessment centre is more challenging. The IST seems to just cut down the initial army of applicants. And does a good job of it too :p
