Twitter Private Messages

Does anyone know how to send a private message to someone on Twitter? I don't want my message to appear on either my profile or theirs. Is there a way to send a message to someone that just appears in their inbox or something?

I don't think the 'direct messages' on there are private.

Would be delighted if anyone know how!

Direct Messages are Twitters equivalent to PMs. They are not visible on the public timeline, only to you and the recipient.

So just say someone looking on my profile page, they wouldn't see the direct messages I sent?

Sorry to ask again but I just need to be sure. Or this could end up very embarrassing!

And also why do some profiles not give a 'direct message' option. They only give '@mention' option. Are '@mention' messages public?

Oh, its one of those is it :)

No, if you send a DM (d username message) it will not show up on the public timeline. If you mention (@username message) it will.

    Thanks for the help.

Sorry to be a pain but I have another question! The person I have to email is not accepting direct messages. Do they need to be following me first? How annoying.

Ah yes, they must be following you in order to be able to see your DM.

Web Rule #76: If something you send electronically, would be embarrassing if someone besides the intended party sees it then don't send it electronically. Web suggests: face-to-face discussion or phone call.

    Yeah thats probably true.

Ok this should be my last Twitter question:

If I sent an '@' message to someone and then delete if off my profile a few seconds later, will they still be able to read it on their profile somewhere?

    Thanks for the help.

If you delete it before they see it or before their Twitter client caches it then no they won't see it.
