Interesting. It requires the context of the previous games, though. What is most interesting is the once off style game, or even the dictator game, which says more about the "loser" than the winner.

Richard C. Koo, Chief Economist from the Nomura Research Institute, held an "Economic Outlook Discussion" at a private luncheon at CSIS.

As Koo frames them, the key features of a balance sheet recession are the following:

A balance sheet recession emerges after the bursting of a nationwide asset price bubble that leaves a large number of private-sector balance sheets with more liabilities than assets.
In order to repair their balance sheets, private sector moves away from profit maximization to debt minimization.
With the private sector de-leveraging, even at zero interest rates, newly generated savings and debt repayments enter the banking system but cannot leave the system due to the lack of borrowers.
The sum of savings and debt repayments end up becoming the leakage to the income stream.
The deflationary gap created by the above leakage will continue to push the economy toward a contractionary equilibrium until the private sector is too impoverished to save any money (=depression).
In this type of recession, the economy will not enter self-sustaining growth until private sector balance sheets are repaired.

I wouldn't even say it's as subtle as that. It is simply a case of "Oooh, everyone else is making quick money, so me gotta make quick money too!"

No in-depth analysis of previous bubbles required. And as you say, even those who could remember, choose not to.

Repec is great, however a lot of the articles aren't free (but the working papers normally are!)

There are some articles that aren't free but from my experience (fairly limited) most of them seem to be free, thanks for pointing that out though forgot to mention it. My quest for the illustrious "free lunch" continues. Also I have come across a few cases where JSTOR didn't have the article I was looking for and Repec did so its no harm to check it out if you're having difficulty finding something.

You might have heard of Wolfram Alpha, a "computational knowledge engine". You type in a request and it gives you back information.

For example: gdp ireland
You can get stock market quotations, example: google
Currency exchange: €1

You can manipulate data sets mathematically. For example, to find out what percent of the EU's real GDP was accounted for by Ireland: real gdp ireland/real gdp eu (wait for the plots to load!)

It's based on Mathematica, which begun as mathematics software. So you can use it to solve, say, a simplified Keynesian model. It can also be used to do ugly calculations and plotting.
