600m Wireless network??

Hi guys,

Basically i have been asked by a friend to investigate setting up a wireless calving camera for him. That part is grand, i have one set up myself, at a distance of maybe 70m line of sight from the router to the IP camera. The camera is a Pan Tilt Zoom and very functional. Problem is my friend needs to transmit ~ 600m :rolleyes: Is this possible using existing wireless technology? I know its possible to have piggyback routers as i have this in my existing setup ( Broadband at one end of the house, Camera out the other side! ), but they would need power, and there are only fields between my friends house and sheds!

So any suggestions? Also id like to keep cost down as much as possible, as the camera alone costs over €400...

Seems hard to believe that you can get 10km of wifi coverage out of something so small!! Technology never fails to amaze me!!

Aside from that, will i also need to buy a wireless router to control them, or have they got dhcp and all that? Yes it has dhcp, routing, bridging etc. etc.

One way of doing it would be: (plenty of other possible configs)

At the camera side:

Ethernet from camera into Locostation. Locostation in AP mode, Bridged.

At the house side:

Locostation in station mode, Bridged and ethernet to your home network, internet router etc. Use dhcp on your home router to give IP to your camera.

First of all why does the camera cost 400 euro? Whats the Spec? Secondly the solutions for this are endless. Can you describe your friends terrain a bit more. Is it direct line of site of not? You say there are sheds are they in the way? Is there trees etc in summer? Does your friend need a PTZ for the calving shed our would a static camera do?

I think that camera has wireless built in which may explain somewhat the high cost.
May be possible to use a high gain directional aerial at the house end only if there is direct line of sight to the camera.
This will help to keep cost down for a start.
