    Hi,

    Reading this thread
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055800625

I just received the card in the post today, but I never saved the phone number I used when filling out the online form (and its not cached in my browser). Aparently they will ask me for my number when I ring them to activate card. I have tried the card to see if its already pre-activated but no luck

Is there anything I can do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,456 ✭✭✭dnme

    My Name
    My Townsland, My Town
    Galway
    Eire
    BT1 1AA

Word of warning to anyone using a UK mainland postcode
It wont work, my card arrived this morning in the post, rang them, number witheld etc etc, she asked for the card number - no problem, then the address - first line no problem - Then she put me on hold to "check my account" - when she came back she said it was not possible to activate the card as my address was in Eire, demanded to know why I had used a London postcode and telephone number, and was I aware I was commiting an illegal act as these cards were only for use in the UK, and I should return the card to Livingstone immediately as I was in breach of the terms and agreement by trying to activate the card!

I spun some bull about being misinformed by a friend and asked about a refund. She said to return the card with a cover letter and they would try to arrange it - but I'm not holding my breath!!! Felt like a criminal by the time she was finished with me and just sent the damn thing back as I'm sure her "screen" has recorded my attempt just in case I tried later!

When the card is in the box does it display a message saying channel unavailable please upgrade your viewing bla bla blah? If you dont get this message leave it on sky 3 overnight

If I put the card in the box, and goto Sky3, or Five say (chan 105), It comes up with

"The viewing card it not authorised, call the broadcaster for assistance"

Just activated my card now. The number I had to ring was 00448448414141 with ID off. Then the machine asks you to type in your phone number so I pressed 2 and then when it asked again 2. Then you use option 2 then 2 then 4. When I got through (very quick) asked to activate card, they asked for address which I quickly mumbled through without the EIRE but with the postcode. She then asked me to confirm Postcode. Then she asked for viewing card number, version number and serial number of the box. Then she when through how long it could take and thanked me for calling.

Just checked card and it is active. RTE up in the 160's. Do you think I could get a basic sky package on this card and use it in a Normal SkyHD for recording both Irish and English channels? Any body try this?

Got my card yesterday, rang the number on the letter to activate the card, all i was asked for was my name, postcode and viewing card number, I was then asked for version number etc and had my channels up on screen straight away, no hassle at all for me so I'm away to order another one!!

Cheers for warning, used a work address in England who are sending on the card, so wont bother trying to use it now.

You should have no problem at all whatsoever in activating a card with an English address once you withold your number. Just make sure the address and postcode and telephone number you give, match the ones you used when ordering the card.

    My situation was much different:

What alerted them straight away with me was the fact that the 3 lines of my address contained an Eire address and the postcode was SW17 xxx which is an address in South West London, which would bear absolutely no relation to say for example a belfast postcode and the word Ireland in an address.

Mind you I could have just been unlucky and got a total bitch of an operater but the fact she only asked me to call out the first line of the address and THEN put me on hold straight away leads me to think that the address had been flagged as suspicious long before I ever made the call.

I'd agree Mickey. Sky are not as dumb as we sometimes like to think. Like any business they have people supervising automated machines. All they have to do is setup a line in a computer to flag any address with the word Eire, Ireland etc and do a manual check.
I went on their virutal chat thing to see could I get subs on my new NI FTV card (subs cheaper and record rte & itvs etc). They could see from my IP? that I wasn't a native so when asked what city I was in, I typed Belfast. They looked soon after for my Card No. so I disconnected.
In saying all that, Sky probably couldn't give a crap what they do with the cards as long as they get their money for a card that opens channels they don't pay for.

P.S. Still can't get the White card to run in my Technomate right yet but will get there in the end.

demanded to know why I had used a London postcode and telephone number

You should have pointed out that it was in fact a CORK telephone number

RTE will not work on the free to view card. You need an aerial to receive the Irish stations unless you subscribe to a Sky package.

BBC, ITV, Ch4 and Five are all FTA and dont need any card.

Your card enables Sky3, Fiver, Five US, Viva and Channel 4 HD.

RTE certainly wont work as its a pay channel on sky as noted already.

    Ok thanks for that

Is that the number that was given on your card/letter or is there another one offered? How did you apply for the card - was it through the Sky website?

Your right. Just tried to ring it now and got some crowd called Routo Telecom. Sky must have cottoned on we were using this number and switched it off.
