Hey, just wanted to know at the IST lets say if there are 30 questions for example and lets say you answered 15 of them, and lets say you got all 15 right, would you get 100% for getting 15 out of the 15 you answered if they were right or 50% for answering 15 questions and getting all 15 right out of 30 ? Basically what im trying to splurt! out of my mouth is if you dont get time to answer all the questions, should you just throw down any answer just to fill up the sheet or if you get them wrong will it come against your overall mark?

    Thanks Tommy ;):D

Tommy, if the tests are marked out of 70 and you get 35 right then you score 35/70, 50%. They couldnt mark you only on what you answer because people could answer two easy questions and score full marks.

Also, the tests are not marked negatively either so you dont lose marks for wrong answers. If you find (and most do) that you wont get some questions answered you cant lose anything by guessing the rest. If you read through the IST thread you will find loads of advice and tips from what has been written previously.

Back again for 2010 campaign :) was really surprised to see it starting so soon, I wasn't expecting anything until march.
Just filled in application form, and checked requirements - glad to see that (due to my problem I guess) they've edited vetting section - now it clearly states, that an applicant must be a resident of UK or ROI for 3 years prior to applying... If I only knew that last year  You live and you learn

    Hi,

    Didn't know about these requirements....

    Bad news I'm afraid:

All candidates should be resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years to enter the vetting process. All applicants who have not lived in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years from the closing date of the campaign will not be vetted and their application will not be processed further.

Will see how it goes. Did not go for the whole 105 words though. I probably put in about half of that!!

Quick question all, and it may seem daft. I have one child and another on the way. We live in Republic and due to family support my partner aint to keen on moving up North. Now, I know you do your first 4 weeks training and you are given accom but what happens after that??

I am just thinking about money for rent etc. Also, can you be in the PSNI and reside in the republic? If so how does it work for salary etc??

    Best of luck all

You can apply to stay in the accomodation block for the full 20 weeks because of the distance you would have to travel each day.

There are a few people who live in ROI and work across the border. It's not a big deal and they strongly advise against it for security reasons.

Got my letter for IST the other day, about 5 weeks away! Wasn't nervous at all about it last year but starting to worry after reading everyone saying not to underestimate it! I think I totally fluked it last year, would be gutted if I failed it this year after having previously passed it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 94 ✭✭0607

You used to be exempt from the IST if you passed it last time and were reapplying the following...

It was great being able to skip it. :D

Out of interest...would spending 6 months in America be classed as not being resident even though it was only part of a gap year and Ive lived here all my life? That seems a bit of a harsh rule, if so had I got to the vetting stage last year it would've been a waste of time because I never knew this!

    Hi guys,

I'm new to the boards and also a first-timer! Got the application in early in the week and have been practising tests past few nights. Maths don't come naturally to me so I'm nervous having read some of the previous postings:(. Anyway, it was really good to find a forum like this one with like-minded folk.

best of luck to everyone, beca

I would guess 6 months living in America would be classed as not being "resident in the United Kingdom or Republic of Ireland for the past three years"... but that's only a guess. The only real way to find out for sure is to contact them and ask.

This book seems to be the best out there at the minute. The feedback I've been given from people who bought it is all positive.

The book that PSNI recommended is the one that I used. It focuses on the English forces but it does the job. There are also a lot of tips and practice tests if you do a quick Google for verbal or Numerical reasoning tests.

How strict is vetting? Ive never been in trouble myself.. My brother was caught several time drink driving... ( I don't associate with him in any way myself...) Im Rc and from way down south... Will this affect my chances?? And what details are you required to give on vetting from? and must you include aunt/uncles details?confused.gif

    Thanks in Advancebiggrin.gifwink.gif

You only have to provide details on your immediate family e.g. father/mother/brothers/sisters and if you are married also your wife and her father/mother.

I wouldn't worry about your brother. Just take every stage in your stride, concentrate on the IST first, it is not easy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭beca

bottom line... if you have a clean history, and none of your immediate family are on the run from the police you will be ok. you cannot be held responsible for their actions!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭Big-Mac

Excellent I ordered that book last week! thanks for that PSNI. I have a question for all you guys if its ok to ask?....are most on here from the north or south? Il start off, im from the south.

    Hi Big Mac,

I'm from the North myself. There seems to be loads from the South on the threads though!

I have that book PSNI refers to. Its very informative and shows how tough the tests must actually be!
