what do the stars that appear after a users name mean?

They indicate post count for Registered Users like yourself. There are 4 white stars for a Moderator, 4 red ones for a subscriber, 5 white stars for Category Mods, 5 gold stars for Admins and of course, the super awesome 5 blue stars if you're an employee
