Best Route - Galway Belfast

I know of Galway Enniskillen Belfast and also M6 M4 M50 M1 Belfast.

The other day on a thread somewhere else someone mentioned an odd route would be quicker

Galway M6 to tyrellspass, N52 to Dundalk and Belfast

It avoids some tolls as they said which is true but would it be any quicker?

I'm still guessing about 4:30 journey time

M6-M50-M1, if you'll be hitting the M50 outside of rush hour. You can go up through the midlands from Mullingar to Dundalk, not a great road tho.

The Sligo/Enniskillen route on the N16 is to be avoided. I was on it recently... Scenic, with Glencar and that, but jeez is it windey. Here's a photo I took:

You can cut across off the M4 through Leixlip, Fairyhouse, Rathoath and into Drogheda onto the M1, missing two tolls. Will cost you about 15 to 20 mins.

Via Michelin recommends M6-M4-M50-M1-A1-M1. Even at that, I think it is underestimating the Mullingar-Dundalk bit as it isn't counting congestion in towns.

BTW, the viamichelin cost calculator is cool, if wrong. It says €7.90 in tolls, whereas it's

How about:

Galway, Athlone, Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh, Belfast

Think that's the route the Belfast - Galway bus uses but I've haven't driven it myself.

Off peak, probably the Motorway remains the winner so... less stressful anyway (if completely boring)

Tolls is the issue though...

Once the bit around Newry is done you'd have mway/dual carrigeway all the way...

Amazing how long it can take to get around this country sometimes...

BTW, if you look at it, the viamichelin planner for Galway to Athlone reckons a time of 1h10min for 80 odd kilometres.
With the new road being motorway with a limit of 120 and not a national road, you'd surely knock a half hour off that for that portion of the journey, leaving a journey time of 4hours whether via Cavan or Dublin.

And to think that not so long ago it wasnt uncommon for Galway to Dublin to take 4hours+!!

Its seems it isn't fully updated for the M6. The maps shows it following the M6, but the journey planners says N6.

Time / distance are also total expired time / distance from the middle of Galway, not on the open road, so its 83km in 1h06 for stage 12-13 and has to account for towns and villages.

Do M6 - M50 - M1 and instead of worrying about road quality, do it by the motorway. To hell with the tolls.
