So out of curiosity - if your details have not been updated on the electoral roll, and no-one who lives at the old address knows you (i.e. not family) - then you could be summonsed, not realize it, subsequently fined - then be in further trouble because the fine would be sent to the old address?

edit: as further q - if people leave themselves say on the electoral register 'home' but live in dublin - then they are also liable for being called up in their home county?

Yes, a person I know got called in Dublin after moving to Roscommon. She got off, I presume you get off because of that.

The secret is to say your prejudiced against ALL races

Does anyone know if you have an immediate member of your family who's a garda can you still get called ? (I mean you'd obviously be more likely to not question any evidence given by a garda)

Oh I'd hate to be the defendent knowing you were sitting on the jury........I would definitely be getting put on the naughty list that year :o

Oh just go and do it....

Bring a book to study if you think your college work will be affected.

I did it and was randomly selected twice, which is very unlikely considering most people dont get selected once. The defense/prosecution objected to me sitting in the jury both times. The only reason i can think of why they would object to me twice (just based on looking at me) is that i was miles younger than anyone else there, as i was only 20 at the time. Same will probably happen to you

Never been called and unlikey I ever will

No crime in our county

Depends what kinda case it's for.

If it's a case of a traveller stealing a bloody washing machine or something, I'd cry off for being a student.

If it was a murder or something interesting, go for it!

Ah yes, justice may be blind and all, but no need to go on the jury for boring cases!:D

Getting out of jury duty is easy. The trick is to say you're prejudiced against all races.

what happens if you say you hold nothing but contempt for the bible?

edit - i mean if you were to say this as a juror, not as the defendant.

you can take a different oath ..... even if you are an athiest.

Then come onto After Hours and tell us how useless the justice system/Gardai are.

You may not even get chosen. The defence gets to reject certain jurors so look like you're a hard ass, judgmental type and you'll probably get the boot anyway

Why do exactly do they reject certain people?

So that they can get a jury who looks more likely to aquit.

    Johnnie Cochran

"...ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, I have one final thing I want you to consider. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense!

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing.

Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests."

Got called for Jury Duty a couple of years ago, ended up on a case for 3 weeks.
I'd recommend everyone does it if you can- It was a pretty interesting experience...also free lunch in the Brazen head every day and 2 weeks (paid) off work so a win win situation really! :D

Actually ending up going out with a fellow juror....love blossoms in the strangest places!! :D

Pretty easy to get of it though..there were seriously lame excuses used when i was there!!

I know why they do it but how do they decide who to pick? Do they go for certain ages genders etc?

I've got it coming up soon.

Is worn jeans, a Confederate flag t-shirt and handle bar moustache an acceptable look?

Is there actually any dress code?

I got a letter as well. This will be my third time being called.. the first time I managed to get off it, the 2nd time court was cancelled that morning.
It never crossed my mind I might have to do it for a few weeks. That'd be a huge hassle. If you were called and it was cancelled are you exempt from doing it again?

Do an Éamonn Mac Thomáis on it, raise a clenched fist in the air and exclaim: "I refuse to recognise the authority of this court!" (July, 1973 - 15 months!)

It always works in pissing off the bewigged "lords" in the courts of this republic.

Alternatively just send back the form with a tick in the "I'm washing my hair that day" box.

I've done it. It was fine, interesting even.

    In the meantime: Watch. Learn.

If you want to get off jury service simply indicate on the form that you have been treated for any form of mental illness.

Even if you were once prescribed anti-depressants you are ineligible for jury service.

You don't have to produce a cert, as you don't have to been diagnosed by a psychiatrist or anything as sophistaced as that.

    Sad but true.

just read the leaflet, it looks as if full time students are indeed excused. chuck norris is on the list under Persons excusable as of right. my mother opened the letter as soon as it arrived, thinking i'd done something illegal, so i hadn't bother to read the leaflet in any great detail taking her word for it.

Is opening someone elses post illegal. Sounds like your oul one needs a good talking to.

Each side wants to get a sympathetic jury, i was watching Jury selection for a rape trial once, the defense rejected a few females, the other side seem to reject younger males.
