Renault Megane v's Peugeot 307- Which car to buy?

Hi

I have a choice of purchasing either a 05 Renault Megane ( 48, 000 miles) for €5,500 or a Peuogeot 307 ( 60,000) for 5200. Which car should I purchase? WHich is more reliable?

Bit rusty on cars since I don't have one at the moment but the Megane has done very well in safety over the past few years if that sorta thing floats your boat? Although I have heard some Renaults reliability is questionable but I'll let the experts give you the better opinion...

have u driven both? do u know someone who cud check both cars over for ya? if they don't have full service histories walk away.

Both cars are for sale from garages and both come with 6 months parts warranty

Even though they are coming from garages it would still be advisable to get a car checked over by someone you trust who knows what they're doing. That way you can be a lot more confident that you're buying a solid car. You'll probably get plenty of people on here telling you to stay away from the Megane (probably a few sayin the same about the 307 too!).

I wouldn't be too concerned about the warranty... If the car is in good shape (verified by a friend as I said above), has a full service history and you take care of it well yourself then the chance of anything major happening in the next 6 months is slim.

That's how I would see it anyway. I'd be a lot happier knowing that I'm buying a car that has been looked after and is driving well than a car that will be fixed for free for the next 6 months.

Honest John are about the closest I have found to actual facts as opposed to biased opinions. I always look before buying a car or recommending one.

+ 1, and they don't seem huge bargains, I would widen my choice, plenty of other cars in that segment would be a similar price.

I've had both in diesel. The 307 was way ahead of the megane for driving comfort. Both pretty similar for reliability, fuel consumption. The 307 was just a nicer car to drive.

trust me keep away from both, 307 regulary last place for reliablity in surveys and megane is not far behind

307 is not a bad car at all, but I would make sure its the diesel model.

Neither. Buy anything else in a car of that size. Too many risks with either one. Most are small electrical problems mind but just dont...

I'd take both cars for a test drive and make my own Decision....:)
Both cars have there up's and downs...but if you pick up a good one of either
you should be fine.
Knowing more about Peugeots and having a 307 at one stage the are a good car...The 1.4 hdi are easy on diesel but are under powered unless you go for the 1.4 90 bhp....:)..or the 1.6/20 hdi.
Tbh with the petrol 307's they aint bad either as they have no dpf's or dmf's.

There is the small matter of the 307 finishing 158th out of 159th in the Top Gear survey 2005 and 99 out of 113 2-3 year old cars tested by TÜV in 2007
