The County councils wont or cant clear foot paths, they wont ask the army to help on health and safety grounds now labor posted this in the irish times
The Labour party has called on the Government to issue “clear guidance” on the legal implications for householders and business owners clearing footpaths of snow and ice in front of their property.

Party spokeswoman on older persons Phil Prendergast said there has been conflicting messages about the issue during the recent cold spell.

She said: “Some reports suggest that a person could be taking on a legal liability by clearing a footpath outside their home or premises but there are also suggestions that failure to clear the footpath could create a legal liability for business owners or householders.”

Ms Prendergast said a website and phone hotline should be established to advise people on elements of civic responsibility and personal welfare in the freezing conditions.

“Some of the many injuries caused by falls due to freezing conditions could have been averted if citizens were made aware of their legal position in relation to clearing paths and other spaces outside the homes and premises,” she added.

now you could be sue'd for clearing or not clearing your own footpath

its happened in the uk already over the last few years, if you leave the path outside you house as it is you not liable, but if you try and removed the snow/ice and then someone has an accident there you will be liable, no wonder no one wants to help each out nowadays :(

Exhibit A: http://www.injuriesboard.ie/eng/Estimator/ - The Personal Injuries Assessment Board Injury Assessor

Example: €15,400 to €34,600 – Minor lower leg fracture – good recovery
And people wonder why sites need insurance.

Yet another reason to hate this country.

    Its true though...

We had an extension built last year, and during the course of the work a truck delivering bricks drove up on the path and damaged the kerb.

The building contractor refused point blank to fix it, and made the truck driver's company pay the county council to do it, because the contractor could be held liable if they fixed it themselves and some gob****e tripped over it and decided to sue them.

    Jesus... That's ridiculous.

Thing is though, with the current conditions with fresh snow falling every few hours, it's better to not clear the paths. You can walk on the snow no problem, the parts where the paths are clear, the snow is thawing out and freezing creating a nice sheet of ice to break your contract on.

I was walking home form a house party last night and the paths were fine the way they were, the dodgy parts were where people decided to clear small sections of it.

A week ago the opposite was true as as all the roads and paths were like glass because they was next to no snow just freezing fog creating ice. I took me over an hour and half to get from my local, I can normally walk it in 30mins.
