No you wont! I'll be studying from the comfort of my own room :P

...resisting the temptation to just play games! ;)

Library is closing at 5 today anyway due to snow.

Exams are class. They're like easy assignments. And I've never only had three before. Two of which will be very easy. I'm too casual with the study already. My notes and everything are all done, organised, prepared, ordered, etc. So at least its a start.

I'm going to go browse the New Year's sales.

Its only Tuesday. The builiding probably hasn't heated back up properly yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 960 ✭✭✭:|

Or they didn't turn on the heating at all. Cos sure who needs to feel their fingers or toes, really.

The alarm going off for about 5 hours was the worst, "security know about it and are going to fix it". Didn't sound like it.

The fact that they had to close at 5 due to "adverse weather conditions" was a bit of a shamble also, the costs of heating should not be a reason to close early 2 weeks before exams after only opening today or yesterday.

lol "adverse weather conditions" - the sun was shining outside.

School of Computing was freezing on Monday. I could not get warm. I ended up with a cold. Yay.

So I'm staying at home for the moment.

Hey, is anyone still waiting on CA results from semester 1? I do business studies and am waiting on like 3 results which still haven't been posted up. Its a joke really coz for one of the modules, the CA is worth 50% so I may have passed the module through the CA alone and if I knew this I would not even bother studying for this module's exam as the subject is absolute bollox and I could focus more on other exams which need more attention. Trying to ring and email and nobody gets back to your or anything. Jesus its the 6th January, how much holidays do they need?

Your CA results wont be posted online until the exam results are in February, unless they're already up on moodle. If they're not on moodle, then contact your lecturer and see if they'll give them to you.

Also, if the CA was an assignment that was handed in just before Christmas, you can't really expect the lecturer to have spent their whole holiday period correcting assignments.

Another eventful day in the library comes to a close early.

    2.00 PM
"Hi, could I have your attention please... due to deteriorating weather conditions, the service desks will be closed at 5pm. However, the libary will remain open until 10PM."

    4.20 PM
"Hi, could I have your attention please... due to deteriorating weather conditions, the library will close at 8PM. Thank you"

True but only one of them was actually handed in before xmas so not expecting to get anything back from that until after exams. One assignment though was submitted in early October which is a bit of a joke really. I guess there are so many people doing business that it must make correcting assignment's a horrible lengthy task.

    Yep. A complete shambles.

    Yep. A complete shambles.

Far from a shambles, their employees are probably going to find it tough getting home, students too, so of course they'll close early to accommodate them.

I would think everybody would understand that decision given the numerous weather warnings to drivers and cancellation (total cancellation today) of bus services. Students can be terribly selfish.

They really should have made the decision earlier to close at 5. They had to do it yesterday, and looking at that storm at about 2 or 3 this afternoon it should have been obvious then that it wouldn't be safe for anyone to be driving home at 8pm. I think for the rest of the week I'm going to assume they are closing at five and work my study around that. The last minute decision to close early today kind of threw me a bit. At least it's warmer at home :p

You'd expect this country had come to a grinding halt with the snow -

Keep in mind most businesses yesterday worked their normally working hours and the DCU library should have been no different! In fact, it’s an almost essential tool for students at this time of year I would have thought it important for it to remain open!

Luckily I don’t have any exams this year, however next year when I’m in my final year, the Library will be my greatest tool in getting a good result. Remember some people can’t study at home. 5 hours of missed study is a big thing.

Also another point to be made is that if the weather was "so bad", surely throwing out the students into it was a bad idea.

The library isnt a business looking to stay open to make money, it's open for long enough for any student to do a full days study and bring home books to the further study at home. After which they close so that everyone can travel home safely. It's a no-brainer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,028 ✭✭✭✭--LOS--

I can understand them letting the library staff go early but theres no reason to shut it all down, its easy to have one security person there till the close and security to go round and lock up all the buildings at 11pm. They dont all live a million miles away, colleges in town are opened that dont even have exams. If we had 24hr study spaces, this wouldnt be a problem! But like plenty of people said, not everyone can study at home.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 173 ✭✭suspectpackage

Yeah, the college is just trying to save money by closing it down early and not letting it stay open with security there. The library staff can go home but the security would love to stay and get some extra hours. It's ridiculous and the SU should be doing something about it but as we all know they are useless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭Choc123

Apparently a number of students are requesting extensions because they can't get up to DCU to study due to the weather.
I don't expect lecturers will be in a position to grant extensions on assignments for that excuse alone however.

because the library staff don't like overtime too?
or wait, because unlike the library staff, the security staff don't have homes or families to go to?
and the SU, it's their fault because they caused the snow in the first place right?

    OR

you just want to moan about everyone and everything and moaning on boards.ie is a great way to procrastinate?

To be honest it is DCU covering their asses. If a student slips and seriously hurts themselves on campus DCU are ****ed. As you all know it gets colder when it gets dark and the ground will become much more dangerous. Look outside now, that is a freezing fog over campus and it is 4 o clock. Things will only get worse. I am gonna stay at home tomorrow methinks.

I think people need to relax a bit, just study at home. That stuff of "you can't study at home" is bollox, you can study anywhere.

The buses will be stopping at 8pm tonight apparently so if you are planning on staying about make sure you are by 8.

With all respect your right, DCU is not a business it is a place of education - but with upcoming exams the library should not be closed early unless logic would warrant otherwise.

When they closed it down yesterday - this was questionable - I just got a call from my girlfriend who told me that all students where told the library is closing at 5 today (Thursday) – why are they closing the library 5 hours early today? There no forecast for snow – main roads are gritted – public transport is operational until 8pm.

As mentioned before the library is a haven for many students studying for the rapidly approaching exams.

Who is responsible for making the decision to close the library?

I think the call came from ferdinand, i thought the library guy said that during the announcement....

Some safety officer was mentioned in the last announcement yesterday, the announcer said a safety officer had told them they had to close. I'm not 100% on that, there was too much groaning for me to hear the entire announcement.

The gym makes money, you have to pay to use it, and it's been open from 6:30am to 10pm all week. The snow hasn't affected the gym, because it generates income. The library doesn't, so I imagine that's the logic behind closing it when students need it most.
