cant say that happens alot.. most country people know what a one way sign looks like... Dubliners however can be left in awe at what they believe to a magical animal ie... the cow

It was a single lane road with a lorry coming against them last post. Make your mind up.

Anyway the whole country has difficult driving conditions. Dublin is being mentioned on the news because of the amount of cars on the road in it. Simple as.

It's not the little bit of snow, in reality it is in fact a little bit of snow, its the fact that the MAIN ROUTEWAYS of the CAPITAL CITY were untreated and hence chaos ensued. Yeah sure being stuck in a rural area down the country is crap, etc etc, but the fact is people in Dublin did "man up" and left the house for work this morning despite the bad conditions, when the snow came around midday, they all were already in work.

These are two different situations, two different problems. A capital city should not shut down due to a bit of snow, but thats what happened today.

I can see both sides, I'm in out in the sticks of North County Dublin, can't get out onto my road at all with the ice. Likewise many people in estates which aren't being served by buses are stuck, particularly elderly people, who may not have anyone to check on them.
Just because its a city doesn't mean its not bloody frozen here too and not everyone in Dublin can walk to work!

Wouldn't mind seeing Dublin win an All-Ireland though.

A million people in the place and we haven't won one since 1995.

Capital and bigger cities always get the most media attention in every country in the world. Deal with it.

    SOOO, what hvae we learned.

Everyone from dublin is a knacker or a self obsessed celtic tiger throw off.

And everyone from outside Dulbin is a redneck (whether from a city or not)

    Ok by me :D

also the whole "why cant we be as prepared as montreal, toronto, new york" thing-i loved to agree but can you imagine if dublin city council or any county council for that matter spent the budget needed to be prepared for this EVERY year and "big freeze" didnt come?? we'd all be moaning about or taxes being wasted on it.

Jaysus isn't Dublin only great. :D

I'm suprised they even go outside Dublin to get other news...

and new york is ten times bigger than dublin and a little snow and ice doesn't close down that city, i was there during the blizzard of 2004, i couldn't see my hand in front of my face the snow was so strong and yet everything was moving. 26 inches inches of snow fell in central park one night a few years back and they had it cleared by morning on most roads, imagine 26 inches falling here, there would be people dying in the streets by the hundreds

Doesn't new york get this weather every winter Dublin doesn't so its not braced for it.
I heard we only have 7 salt/grip dipencing machines for Dublin city alone that doesnt really sound right.

Why can't we be as prepared as London, Amsterdam, Copenhagan, Paris, etc.?

People are blowing this stuff way out of proportion, it will be over in a week or two and then most likely we won't have weather this bad for another few years (probably longer).
The councils have been really disorganised though and this is where a lot of the problems are coming from.
Not that I expect miracles from them, but I think that they should have had supplies of salt etc sorted a lot quicker.

Yeah well when society collapses I'll be sitting here on the porch of my farm with my shotgun waiting to shoot any starving jackeen whilst feasting on my few acres of potatoes whilst slaughtering a fattened calf whilst getting pissed on homemade cider

    Last laugh to culchies

In fact 90% of people in this city (myself included don't give a flying **** about Dublin GAA and I'd say most of the remainder don't care either and only even go to games because it's a nice day out during the summer.

lol i had taxi drivers, old women, kids etc from dublin ask me "gotta spare ticka for d match" when they heard me talking about how i managed to secure a ticket for the semi final in 2006 with dublin and mayo

gaa doesn't mean alot to most folks until the team starts doing well, amazingly enough roscommon brought 20,000 down to ennis in september 2006 for the minor final replay, i was at the first match that season back in may against galway, no more than 100 roscommon fans made that journey

stick on sky news, london and england in general is at a standstill.
most of europe traditionally gets harder winters, therefore they expect it, prepare for it and budget for it.
dont get me wrong,im not defending dublin city council and dont want it to appear that way, but this doesnt happen that often here, hence the lack of enough gritters etc etc.

snowing in donegal/leitrem/parts of sligo/mayo the monday before xmas, alot of that was ice xmas weekend, more snow fell on top of that, thawed slightly and then it was a total ice rink, some it still remained on new year, and fresh snow this week, and the gritters only arrvived recently

and dublin thinks they have it bad

Don't forget the fact that the LUAS still isn't working down here in Sligo either.

where do people get the idea the dublin area only got hit today? its been just as bad here since xmas. new years here was worse than anywhere, i drove from mayo on new years day and the only problems were when we hit dublin.

I agree, but we can absolutely be prepared for a situation. We've got no grit in a country that was cold throughout December. How they did not anticipate ice is insane. And a week later, they still haven't got sufficient grit.

I said it in another forum, but they'll spend more money on Blooms day or some other stupid event in this city then they will during this, thus abandoning the citizens of the city in place of a crap touristy event hosted by senator Norris

you'd swear the people in the country were tearing round icy roads at 100 kmph the last few weeks and only people round dublin cant drive on ice......

Oh... I deleted that! Thought it was a bit harsh on the poor farmers!

Well, try living without water, try living without heat - or try living in a rural area where you are essentially cut off

    No thanks.

Kudos to the boggers and all that, though.

It's not that the water mains in my area froze, leaving me with no water, or that the pipes to the boiler burst, leaving me without heat. I just decided to switch the mains off & sabotaged the boiler for the fun of it.

I thought it would help me man up.

Sure who needs heat when it's only minus 10 degrees?! ;)
