Car Talk: What is High Load and Low Load?

Something I have never just to grips with fully. What does it mean when they say High Load. Hard acceleration? What does it mean when they say low Load. Easy accerleration?

I would imagine that it refers to the work the engine has had to do during its lifetime (high load = lot of work) but I guess it also depends on the context of the conversation.

I was reading about breaking in a New Diesel Engine

The article said its better to drive up hill in high gear under Heavy Load.

Rather than change down and give it higher revs, keep it in a higher gear at lower revs but feed it plenty of juice to stop it stalling
