I would have thought that this was the perfect resource for meeting other musicians and getting some actual music happening, but it really doesn't seem to be.
Unfortunately, it seems to be riddled with kids trying to start 'projects' ("Project"? wtf?), mostly in the tiresome indie/metal pigeonholes. Either that or it's pub/corporate/wedding cover bands.
Where are all the people that actually love music?
Is there no one out there that learned to play an instrument purely through the basic love of creating music, straight from their heart and soul, rather than to earn a few quid or massage ther own peurile sense of self importance with their 'projects'? They must be out there somewhere... Please...?
I'm obviously in the wrong place...

Tell me, if you convince yourself enough on a daily basis, can you actually think your self opinion makes you better or matters for the most part? This is a music forum, anyone above the age of 22 who no longer wants to live in artistic poverty will join a covers band to pay the rent!
Find a store that cashes cheques based on Artistic intgerity and then you can have your board the way "You" want it, until that day you will remain a self parody of what your so desperately trying to put down.
Correct me if im wrong but this board is there to let people express themselves as they see fit, and join whatever style they see fit, regardless if its pigeon holed in the tiresome indie / metal genres, just because they don't adhere to what you believe music to be doesn't make them any less valid. I myself have found a probable band to join from these boards alone, which i otherwise would not of found. Does that make me less of a musician? i think not. and any comment otherwise will only portray you as a bitter person who cant get along with people in real life so you resort to starting flamebait threads online.
No one is forcing you to post on them, so with respect you can take your elitesm and shove it, With all respect of coarse.

"Real" musicians usually know other musicians with whom they can get their music together, as opposed to hoping that the perfect stranger they meet on the internet will conveniently turn out to have the musical attributes they're seeking.

I can appreciate your frustration at not being able to find suitable musicians, but lambasting others with a different interest in, and attitude to, music, does not help your plight. The "Bands and Musicians" forum is a lottery. Sometimes you get lucky, most times, probably not. All you can do is keep trying. Don't shoot the messenger.

Maybe you could try putting up a message in some of the music shops, or try www.gumtree.ie.

Either way, taking out your frustration on others is not the way to go.

You know what, with the day thats in it, I'm going to lock to this thread til tomorrow or the next day. If you have a problem with that, take it to feedback.

To be honest i dont know why you bothered to re-open this thread.........its quite obvious the route its going to take. I thought more of boards than to let someone post a thread which can have only one possible outcome of being yet another pointless thread for people to argue over something ridiculous..........

Well, I like a good debate as well as anyone. If you have a problem with my modding, please take it to feedback. It's an interesting dilemma and one I have thought about as well.
Now that we are having some decent debates/conversations on here, I have found the posters are definitely becoming more knowledgeable in the fields of playing live.
I never liked the fact that when I became a mod of here, it was basically a wall in a guitar shop that you could stick your "BLEEDIN' DEADLY GUITARIZT WANTED" sign up.
It now appears to be a place musicians come to. In my opinion of course.

For the record, I requested it to be opened. To be honest I have often wondered myself, why it's so hard to get people together successfully to jam or join a band, though I would not take it out on others like the OP did. I think it is a subject that needs to be aired. Provided people don't get abusive, I cant see any harm in it.

Hi I get some of the guys point but maybe it could of been put across a bit better.

There arnt many guys left who create / started to play music just for the love of it.

when I started out it was only about playing music because I loved it it was never about financial gain.

my music still is not about financial gain or a project here or there, BUT ALL of my income comes from music either tv / radio / cover / studio etc..etc..

but as I said "MY MUSIC" is not for financial gain, and when I record for myself I try to get as much of that early innocence I had back and never record listening to my bank balance.

I agree that a lot of the posts looking for band members, always seem to include "need to get gigging as soon as possible". I often wonder, what's the hurry? On the other hand, if gigging (and therefore possible reward) is high on the agenda, it is puzzeling that there are so many "no shows". I suppose it's a case that a lot of "bedroom wannabes" crumble when push comes to shove.

This is exactly it. I got paid €144 from my "day job" last week. I only get about 15 hours a week these days and will probably lose it completely at the end of January. In contrast, I played 2 gigs on Saturday and last night for which I got about €200. Playing in a covers band is paying my rent/bills and allowing me to work on playing the music I love. If I'm not a real musician for earning money doing something I love in order to live then I'm quite happy with that.

playing pubs pays while you make your own stuff, also helps distribute so you can contrabute checks in large amounts to your banks accounts.

I never said there was anything "wrong" with earning money from playing pub covers, I have done it myself and I'm sure I'll do it again in the future.
I'm just asking where all the real 'proper' musicians are, as they don't seem to be here. I'm trying to highlight that this forum is a great resource, it just looks like it's not being used to it's full potential by actual music loving musicians.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 901 ✭✭✭EL_Loco

    this thread smells familiar, anyway,

I know alot of musicians and maybe 1 at a stretch is on here. Some musicians are into computers and some aren't. The ones who are into computers may or may not use this site. As you work your way through the "parametres" it becomes a smaller and smaller pool of people who are actually on here.

If you are looking for band mates you have to cast your net wide and boards.ie should be 1 of many places you look.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭The Paulinator

Hi, yeah, I do look in other places, I'm just questioning why this forum isn't used to it's full potential.
I think you and Rigsby may have the right answer, a lot of them may not use the computer/internet so much and they would have a 'word-of-mouth' network anyway. Back in my hometown, I would have known anyone that was an accomplished player by reputation and from chatting to people at gigs/parties/pubs, unfortunately that doesn't help here. Maybe I just need to get out and about a bit more. C'est la vie, I suppose...

OP, another suggestion you might like to try, seeing as it's a blues band you are in, is JJ Smiths on Aungier St. http://www.jjsmyths.com/gigs.html

They have an open mic night on the (I think ! check it on the link) first Tuesday of every month. People bring along their instruments for an open jam. A good opportunity to find possible band members.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭Libertine2002

I whole-heartedly agree with the OP on most of his opinions (although not with his sensitivity!), I find myself constantly coming back to Boards.ie looking for musicians and finding not much other than kids with no experience. You could argue that any decent musician would already have a network of friends in the business but some of us, especially in rural areas with very few venues nearby, have trouble meeting "likeminded types" and have to rely on the internet to find serious musicians.

I'm a drummer myself so I do often look for the quick buck with the singer-songwriter in the recording studio or the odd pub or wedding gig, so I don't see any problem with musicians using Boards as a way to put together a pub-band to earn a few quid, it's better for a musician to be making money from music in some way than to be working for some capitalist at a meaningless job somewhere.

Maybe some techie here will create a forum where members can be searched based on their experience. A kind of "rate-my-musician" meets "match.com". (You heard it here first so send a share of the profits this way)

I've been looking for a female singer/maybe guitarist/maybe keyboardist to join a band for a good while.

We've an album made and for sale on iTunes so we're hardly chancers. Yet it's been a difficult slog getting people.

It's true that for other positions in the band we've filled them from friends who are also musicians- but we don't have someone suitable for this.

There's been some interest all right, but the usual no shows when push come to shove etc have happened. Frustrating, but you got to focus on the goal of waiting on the right person.

What's a real musician, btw? I am no pro, would not consider myself particularly talented, but I did self finance an album. Does that make me more or less of a "real" musician?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Rigsby

    What's a real musician, btw?

I also, have wondered what the OP meant by this. My own idea FWIW, of a "real" musician is some one who can play their instrument to a reasonably high standard in any genre, can read music, and has a professional attitude, (as apart from being a "professional"), i.e. always turning up for gigs/practice, being punctual and generally reliable.

    A rare breed indeed ! :D

    :D

I wonder will this be refuted by some? I would agree about reading music but I have many musician friends who are proud that they do not and would never want to read music. These are people who are gigging etc btw. I swear one of them thinks I'm not a real player because I read music, like I'm making it too easy for myself or something?

Edit: That looks weird, the word proud. I don't mean that not reading music is somehow "shameful" :) But I can't understand why a working musician would cut themselves off from some music by not learning a pretty simple skill :)

I cant understand either, why someone would be "proud" not to be able to read music. Sounds like a cop out to me. I'd love to know their reasons.

Maybe the word "real" is a bit vague. I'd prefer "all round" musician.

'Real' musician, maybe not the right word, I'm not sure I can define it in words. I know what I mean though, and I would say most of you do too.

I've started 2 threads over the last year stating the same, there are a.) too many non singing guitarists vs other instruments on here and b.) too many casuals, but having said that, perserverance has found me some real gems of people on here, I've met at least 4 people in the last 3 years who could play, didn't reply to my add and then disappear, turned up to rehearsals and were nice people too.

I would have thought that this was the perfect resource for meeting other musicians and getting some actual music happening, but it really doesn't seem to be.
Nothing is perfect. This forum is one of many resources available to arrange meet-ups with other musicians.
Unfortunately, it seems to be riddled with kids trying to start 'projects' ("Project"? wtf?), mostly in the tiresome indie/metal pigeonholes. Either that or it's pub/corporate/wedding cover bands.
Why do you feel the need to be so condescending towards indie and metal? Cover bands will always be a popular draw as they are more likely to result in money being made by the band :).
Where are all the people that actually love music?
Well, I like to think that I love music. God forbid it ever happens but given a Sophie's Choice of losing my sight or losing my hearing I would choose to be blind without hesitation. I spend most of my day either listening to or playing music and would most likely be quite lost without it.
Is there no one out there that learned to play an instrument purely through the basic love of creating music, straight from their heart and soul, rather than to earn a few quid or massage ther own peurile sense of self importance with their 'projects'? They must be out there somewhere... Please...?
I'm obviously in the wrong place...
Again, I'd like to think that I'm one of those people. I've no interest in going down the cover/wedding band route and I've quit bands in the past when I've been outvoted over the musical direction a band was going in. If I'm going to go to the effort of getting it together to play on stage I want to be excited by the music I play and no cover song can ever compete with watching a room full of people appreciating an original song that you have put together.

As for being in the wrong place, I can't remember when I first discovered the Bands & Musicians forum but in the years since then I've jammed with some excellent musicians and made some great friends that I wouldn't otherwise have. Persevere as you never know who's going to read your ad.

There is an underlying stigma with some musicians that if you can read music, then you're one of them posh, classical, nerdy, giant violin playing people. My reasons for not being able to read music are, that I taught myself how to play everything, guitar, bass, drums, piano and to learn to read music now would simply be a waste of my time. I'd learn to play something quicker by listening to it a load of times rather than reading it off a page, even tabs take too long to get through.

... and what, I wonder, do they find so bad or off putting about these people  I'm of the opinion that it's all just music. Reading enhances your ability to play and enjoy it, regardless of your social status. This is why I find it hard to understand this, and the "proud not to read" attitude.

You wonder what some people find off-putting about posh upper and middle class people? (that is a whole other rant)

I disagree about reading enhancing your ability to play or enjoy music. The ability to read music is just not necessary. It makes no difference to me if I could read music or not as I said already I can learn songs quicker by just listening to them, reading notes would only slow me down.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I disagree. It depends on the music you are playing. How long would it take you to learn an extended complex piece of classical music by ear do you think ?
