Is it possible to get Slugs for a 12g or .410 in ireland. If so would they do the trick?

They can be got, or at least, they used to be available, but since to introduction of the most recent tranche of Firearms Legislation, they are classed as Restricted Ammunition.

Slugs are restricted ammo in Ireland now, AFAIK.

If you mean shooting fox with shotgun, 36 gram BB load will do just fine, or AAA same weight, I prefer the BB load though. 40 yards is the general rule for shotguns and fox. I've killed a fox at 55 yards, and I know of clean kills out to 70 yards, but it's not to be recommended I would say. Stick to within 40 yards, a side on shot and it's hard to go wrong, keep that swing going through the fox after pulling the trigger, if you stop the swing you'll hit him in the back end and he'll wobble off at whatever speed he can muster.

Rovi, what reason would a person have for buying slugs now? I was trying to think of one off the top of my head but came up blank. Closest I got was some type of target shooting maybe, but I can't get it specific.

Attached should be the S.I. with the bit about shotgun slugs.

As you can see, they're listed along with explosive & incendiary ammunition, grenades, bombs and other missiles, and ammunition for prohibited weapons, among other things.

Given all that, I'd suspect that the chances of getting whatever permission is now required, to be pretty slim
