After Pop they should have taken a long break and either refocused on what they do best or fcuk off and retire.

Yet they can sell out concerts to a fraction of the population.

Spice Girls, they just had to make that last album :pac:

REM....The Reveal album was their last great hurrah if you ask me, following 2 albums since were somewhere between patchy and crap.

I think Kings of Leon should call it a day before they fully turn into Bon ****ing Jovi or something like that. Sell outs.

Defintely the smashing pumpkins for me... Was always a big fan during the 90's/my teenage years. Went to see them in the RDS a few years ago after the re-form. Probably the most dissapointing gig I have ever been to. It was just a billy corgan "look at me" fest... The classics were good, the rest was just w@nk...

I can't really disagree with any of the acts mentioned already; it's nearly always the case that (I think with the exception of Madness, who seem to have taken 30 years to release their magnum opus, Norton Folgate!)

Madness- The Liberty Of Norton Folgate-The exception that proves the rule!:pac:

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bon Jovi before now. The last album of theirs that I liked was Crush around 2000 and I only liked about half of it. Nothing since then has wowed me. They are very good live but its only because they play all of their classics. Saw their original MTV Unplugged recently and it just highlighted how much they have gone down the pan. Glorified boy band these days.

their new album has some really good songs on it i think but lets face it no great band is going to release great albums every time

    What are you on?

Radiohead should have quit after OK Computer?! Kid A was voted number 1 album of the decade by Rolling Stone, The Times and countless others. Hail to the Thief is very good and In Rainbows is brilliant.

The Oasis comment I agree fully with. But the Radiohead comment is just downright ridiculous.

I think any band that does that seminal album, their 'OK Computer' should call it a day or at least stick to the stuff that makes such an album great.

Whats the point in making the same album over and over? progress comes from change.

    Purely Metal bands......

Metallica - Nothing really worth talking about, Album wise, since The Black Album. Death Magnetic is an improvement on the last three, but they've lost the fire of 1983-1991.

Ozzy - Probably should have quit around the No More Tears album back in 1991. Has released some pretty patchy albums since then. And let's not forget that abomination of a song 'Dreamer'

Motörhead - Lemmy may be God, but God's been away on other Business since 'Bastards' in 1993.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son back in 1988 was their last really great album. The rest have been treading water.

Slayer - Slayer's problem has been that they haven't evolved at all musically since 1991. So 'Seasons in the Abyss' is their last really good album.

Bang on the money with pretty much all of the above although i think Master of Puppets was Metallica's masterpiece and they've never quite hit that level since. Justice saw them go a bit more bluesy in places and they seem to have forgotten how to thrash altogether since the black album. But then you go see them live and the tear the place apart.....

Change is good but if it's some pissy commercial shite or pretentious art house stuff then they might as well just pack it in, perhaps my previous post was vague on the matter. I am just sick of bands that when they reach a certain height they think they can throw something together (lazily) or try a total different avenue (e.g. the Kings of Leon and what they did on their 2nd album versus what they did on their 4th album) because they know they have the fan base that they can get away with it. It sickens me.

I think the Kings of Leon example is an interesting one. Yes, their first 2 albums are different from their 3rd and 4th. Yes they did start to achieve more mainstream after the release of the 3rd album, causing many to say they 'sold out'. However there 3rd[although the 4th was horrible] album, while almost radically different to the first 2 , was still mostly a cracker of an album= example of how change can be for the better. Yes its a risk, but you can't reach the gold on the other side without crossing the bridge!

As much as I love them both, Muse and Biffy Clyro's latest albums are both very poor by their own standards.

Not sure about Foo Fighters new stuff either, and they've brought out the dreaded Greatest Hits album now.

Are you mad they became really big after their 2nd album not their 3rd album.
Ive never heard much of the 'soldout' tags being attributed to kol until the 4th album which is a load of ****e.. and if they continue down this path the shall definitely be added to this list.

so your saying Metallica should have quit after "Black" when they started evolving their music, and Slayer should have quit in 1991 because they didnt evolve??

Metallica changed their sound and style over the years, and kept it interesting. If they were still putting out albums like Justice/lightning/puppets, you would probably get bored of it and say they havent "evolved".

Load, and ReLoad are very decent solid albums. They're not their best, by far, but they're not bad albums. Some great songs on there. St. Anger though, is rubbish.
They should have quit after Garage Inc.

Ah here now! Achtung Baby! Every song on that album is hit worthy.

Why would a band quit when they peaked it doesn't make sense. No Achtung Baby, no Kid A, no Be Here Now. C'mon man.

Niel Young is another one, wasn't at his last concert but I heard it was rubbish from a number of people.

GTFO that was one of the better concerts of last year.

I was at Neil Young in Cork in 2008, and it definitely ranks in my top three gigs ever. I was so excited even before the gig, as it was widely known that his latest tours are possibly the best he's even done.

Once Eric Clapton stopped playing the blues he really sucked.

Eric Clapton should have retired the night Jimi Hendrix got up on stage in his place for a song during a Cream gig. Witnesses say Clapton stood backstage and was shaking at how good Jimi was.

Completely agree with you about Queen, my fave band of all time and now Paul Rodgers is raping the songs at knifepoint!
But the Prodigy dude? Their latest album released last year was awesome! Dave Grohl drummed for 2 or 3 of the songs on it and it really is a rocking album. Went to see them in the Marquee in Cork and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to!!

The Undertones. Call me a prude but the idea of man in his mid 40's still singing a song about masturbating in his bedroom doesn't really do it for me.

We should really have a forum for discussion of these old bands.
Hmmm. Leave it with me folks.
    I'll get right on it.

I really think Bob Dylans newer stuff is terrible too.

He should have quit after making this video. It's so bloody eighties, it's cringeworthy. And I thought the guy was cool.

Seriously though, it look me a long time to get into Modern Times and I still wouldn't be that overly enthusiastic about it.

Dylan had two albums in the top ten in the Uncut Magazine albums of the decade list, and Love and Theft even came in at number two. They both recieved massive critical acclaim too, so we're obviously missing something here. Modern Times was also his first Number 1 album in America since Desire (an album I really love)..I do like a lot of stuff from them, but I just don't see them as that great tbh.
