Didn't Enya use the name of one of the characters for one of her songs?
They are linked by the river Orinoco
Orinoco the womble was named after the river Orinoco
The song was called Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)

I loved the Wombles as a kid, I'm reliably informed that my mother brought me to see them in the cinema opposite Crumlin Hospital (think it was an ice rink at one stage and then a bingo hall) about a million years ago.

The Wombles were fairly tame compared to some others of the time. Case in point: the Clangers:

They were hippies off their pallets on something....living in a field...eating rubbish.

Much preferred the Clangers myself (which was an offshoot of the classic Noggin the Nog)
