    Hi all,
One of my new years resolutions is to try and pick up a new language. Besides English, I have a decent grasp of French but want to start from the beginning with a new challenge.
My initial choice was Spanish but now I'm juggling between that, Portuguese and Italian.
    Any recommendations :)?

I would love to learn Irish, but if you want the language to be beneficial to you I would choose a language that is spoken throughout the world.

There is a great need for German speakers in lots of jobs.

Spanish is supposed to be easy to learn and it is used in a lot of countries. If you want something hard but rewarding try Cantonese or Mandarin.

    Quite the joke I was .. :p

    Awesome :D

The other kids were being naughty to the first kid and I was just trying to help and then all hell broke loose and there was blood everywhere.

Why did you let us have a grammar/speeling war? Lives were lost, mothers lost sons, dogs lost owners and I lost my blue underpants.

*EDIT: just to say I accidentally wrote speeling instead of spelling.......I am not going to change it either :)

Yeah, even after 18 months in Korea the kids were still amazed when I knew about Korean food, they would almost die if I spoke Korean to them.

Are there really loads of jobs going for German speakers... o.O

I'm defintely going to learn Irish at some point...if at all for free! But I'd pay for night classes.

Did Spanish, it's a pretty damn cool language.

If I go back to NZ I'm gonna learn Maori and Tongan!

Was it nerdy of me to put that one in just so I could have you correct me one more time?

My mates dad is the primeminister (possibly former now) of Tonga, or possibly the Cook Islands, but I'm almost sure it's Tonga

In fairness, thinking about it really... I'd be more up for learning Maori than Tongan.

I learned Italian and French in school and currently I'm studying Spanish in college. Italian's good, I wish I still did it! the words are pronounced exactly as spelled, the accent is easier to master than the Spanish and French one imo. Portuguese (havent learnt it mind) seems to be a little less related to French than It or Sp. Spanish is a good one though, it's spoken in a lot of countries as you know and it's easier than French.
The great/worst thing about the Latin based langs is that a lot of the words are similar. Sometimes I come out with Italian in my Spanish classes.. it's grand if you are reading/listening to Spanish but not so good when you have to speak!

For an unusual learning odyssey I'd steer away from the romance languages and go for one belonging to a culture that intrigues you. I'd go for Japanese.

Dutch is fun. Something I've been learning a short while now.

Spanish is useful for traveling to many countries.

French will supposedly help attract the wimenz.

Russian/Chinese are best for business as Russia/China have rapidly growing markets and there will be a lot of business opportunities there. Hard to learn though.

    Tot ziens!
