Booting to a pointer and blank screen

Hi folks,

I recently installed a dlink dns-323 storage device on my network. i installed the backup software from the cd and when i rebooted and put in my encryption password its booting to a blank screen, with my mouse pointer working.

when i hit ctrl alt delete, nothing comes up. when i boot to safe mode its the same.

also i noticed my screen saver seems to be working. i am trying to get to see if i have a system restore point but cant seem to twig how to find this.

any help appreciated. dont want to reinstall yet as have files i want to recover.

Can you clarify this sorry?

If you stick in your windows cd you should be able to restore from there.

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/ at "If Your System Won’t Boot" part should give you a guide and even show you how to burn the repair/restore cd if you don't have one.
