Sad to hear that man, I'd say check with the Gardas was wezz on that night and was there any calls of loud or drunk groups in the area, only thing I can think of for now.

If you don't mind me asking, how old is he? Disgusting that something like that could happen.

Exact same age myself, best of luck to you, your brother and your family anyway Gavin, can't imagine how hard this must be right now.

    Hi Gavin.

Never had any dealings with you, but I wish your brother and all who worry for him well.

Don't hope for a rushed job, hope for a proper job, he'll be out when he's out, and back to full strength.

Its worth doing as some of the posters said, letting a few of the taxi drivers know, they might be able to put the word out.

Hopefully it wasn't anything malicious, that it was just a slip and a fall, and not an assault.

Just back from seeing him (the night time no visiting is between 8pm and 11pm) still doesn't get any easier going into that unit I tell you. He hasn't changed, although the pressure on his brain has lowered a very very tiny amount which means there's not that much of a rush to get the shunt in afaik.

    That's positive news,Gavin.
Hopefully things will stay on that track.

I lit that candle btw and said a prayer for him.

I'm not a church goer but I talk to God in my own way.

Take care of yourself and your folks and thanks for letting us know.

Gavin, something very similar happened to my younger brother years ago. He was definitely assaulted though. The guys who did it were wanted for attempted murder, but were never caught.

He made a full recovery eventually and I truly wish the same for your brother. I know the pain of the waiting. Stay with your family, they need you and you need them.

    xx

    Hey Gav,

I pretty much only know you from many LOI discussions on the football forums although they are as clean as they get between a shels and a rovers fan!

Wish you and your brother the very best of luck. I know exactly what your going through as recently my sister in law had to endure an op to have a brain tumour removed. She is doing very well now thank fully so hopefully your brother follows a similar path.

All the best mate and lets hope its good news on both the recovery and the investigation front.

    Graham

Hey Gav, my thoughts are with you and your family ar this time. I know a couple of nursing and technical staff who work in Beaumont Head Injuries and Cardiology and by god, in the face of the current adversity, they do sterling work. Work I know I'd never be able to do. Your bro is in very capable hands up there.

    Get well soon

Cheers again all, still at the same situation as yesterday afaik. Off up to see him now in a bit.

Indeed they do, the two nurses who are looking after my Bro are brilliant, couldn't ask or anything more, even when we were down in the canteen on Sunday one of his nurses who had clocked off and was going home gave us an update, they're so nice and helpful.

Thats good. He's already got some groupies to sponge him down when he comes to.

Looks a bit better today actually, have raised the bed a bit aswell up near is head as there doesn't seem to be any spine damage.

His blood has enough plasma atm now, but they've decided not to put the shunt into his brain as the pressure and bruising seems to be looking after itself. But the option is now available incase there's happens to be an emergency.

Plan atm is to start waking my bro up over the weekend and see if they can then take him off the life support, taking him off the life support will all depend on how strong his own breathing is. The whole process of waking him up could take up to 5 days, gonna be a long weekend and week if this plan goes ahead.

Still critical, but the main thing is he's stable.

Gavin, my own brother came off a ladder 11 years ago, and from your description he had almost identical injuries as your brother. The good news is that today my brother is happily married with kids BUT the recovery process is somthing that will be a very slow process with many many new and strange difficult stages. He is receiving as professional care as there is in Europe as the Beaumont staff and surgeons are as good as there is. Now is not the time but feel free to pm me and I will happily discuss my experiences. For now try and be patient, there is little else you can be, he is very young and this will stand well for his recovery.

This injury will effect you all and I remember a surgeon (Ravelok) saying to me that they can not really assess the long term consequences of a brain injury before 3 years have passed since the trauma. http://www.headway.org.uk/home.aspx is a site you may wish to view to help you gain some understanding of this type of injury.

I feel for you and hope all comes good. Keep cool and strong for the rest of your family,

    regards,

    BB

I'm sorry to hear. I've seen recoveries before, they can take time, be as patient as possible.

Best wishes to you, your brother, your entire family, I genuinely hope all goes well, I understand the sudden nature of an accident

I'm glad your reports a positive and that your brother is now stable. I hope the waking up part goes well and he is strong enough to breath on his own.
I also hope that yourself and your family are doing well, I know that stressful situations can take its toll on everyone. Stay strong x

    How is the investigation going?

    Folks

Our thoughts and prayers are with Gavin "shels" and his family at this particular time. We would ask that anyone with any information that can help them at all to contact Donnybrook Garda Station on 01 666 9200 or to contact us at Boards.ie - hello@boards.ie - and we will pass the information on.

    Clarification:

Last night a number of comments have appeared on this thread in relation to a story in yesterday’s Evening Herald under the headline ‘Teen found with brain injuries on city street’.

Some of these comments were highly critical of the Evening Herald and a member of its staff on the basis that no direct contact was made between the Evening Herald and the family of the injured youth involved.

It has been brought to our attention that this was not the case and that in fact direct contact was made between the Evening Herald and a member of the family who confirmed the details of the incident and supplied additional information.

On the basis of this discussion, a request was made that the name of the injured youth or the family name would not be published. The Evening Herald was happy to comply with this request.

A subsequent request not to run with the story could not be facilitated as the Evening Herald had already gone to press.

We firstly wish to clarify this situation for you, and assure you that from the direct communication with the Herald that has been made available to us, that we believe they have acted as well as they could have in this particular incident. While 2 lines of the article were taken from Boards.ie - and the Herald have confirmed this - most of the information in the story came directly from the emails between a family member and the journalist.

We have little issue with journalists taking stories from Boards.ie if they have the permission of Boards.ie and the Original Poster. We have, once again, made this clear to the Evening Herald.

Secondly, and more importantly. we cannot condone Boards.ie being used to organise personal attacks on anybody. It is not what the site is for. We recommend our members always ensure they have the full story behind any situation before taking action which would result in any person receiving communication of any sort regarding something that has appeared on our site. What appears on the site is not always true.

The journalist in question has received messages from Boards.ie members that have been based on what was written on the site, without the whole story being known. We regret that our site was used to facilitate such messages being sent and we are working to ensure this does not happen again. It is, at its very core, not fair or proper.

Please folks, all we ask is that before you act, you make sure you know what you're acting on. Its just something we ask you to bear in mind. Its only fair.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

I'm locking this thread but leaving it in place to allow people to get information that may help Gavin "shels" or his family. We have discussed this with the After Hours mods and we are sure that we are taking the best, and fairest, action open to us at this time.

    Thanks for your time,

    Darragh

Thanks to The Zohan who re-opened the thread at my request.

Bro was released from hospital yesterday for good (apart from his 10 million appointments in the next couple of months). He's doing good, aside from his left eye which he'l never see out of properly again, atm he can only see blurs through it and will be like that unless the optical nerve which is damaged repais itself.

From the nurses in the ICU in Beaumount, to the nurses in the High Depency Unit in Beaumount to the nurses in the ward in Vincents, and to all the surgeons, doctors, etc... you's do truly do one of the hardest jobs and by God do the majority of yous do it brilliantly, thank you.

Still hoping someone can shead sum light on the accident, went to where he was found, etc... and it just doesn't make sense at all.

Thanks all for the support and the private messages over the last while, much appricated.
