    Hi,
I am starting a survey for door to door newspaper deliveries in the Dublin 15 area to start in Jan 2010..
I will be delivering all morning, evening, and weekend papers door to door.
Anybody interested would tick of what newspapers they require and pay their bill a week in advance and expect all their newspapers delivered to their door everyday...
I do realise its very hard work working all hours and in such cases very bad weather but I am all up for that, especially with 2 children to raise...
I am just wondering if there is any business in this at all??
as i am finding it extremely hard to get a job..
I would most appreciate you feedback
    thanks

The margins from Newspapers are so small that this business would simply not make you any money. In addition you'd have to have transport (i.e a Van) to collect and deliver the newspapers. Costs money to run. And then there's the admin involved keeping track of whose paid what etc. That in itself would probably give you many grey hairs on your head. This is not a runner.

I'd imagine it could be a runner, my parent still have papers delivered every evening, so obviously it's possible to earn a living from it..
It would largely depend, on if someone else is already doing it? what's the concentration of paying customers in that area? what margin can you get from each delivery? Do you make enough to hire someone (delivering yourself will be slow, you driving and handing papers to 2 runners is far quicker (one each side of the road))? Are you willing to work those hours for the remaining profit ? etc...

i think it would definitley be a runner alright!!
I know alot of poeple in this area and im sure they would love to have their newspapers delivered to their door..profit margin would be great actually would just be an average wage i guess... as you know dublin 15 is a BIG area i would work on my own(hard work i know..!)for the first few weeks then hire someone to work with me..
i wouldnt actually have to admin to track payment i make my own money by collectin door to door bills every week and giving the company their share an have my own share for delivieries.
I have spoken with the company a few times and this is what we are doing providing i get the customers

    Hi Gavt

theres a basic flaw in your plan, if a stranger came to my door , asked me to hand over say €20 and he would deliver the papers to me , would i give it to him??

sorry no. there are too many scam artists out there at the moment.

where would you get the papers from?

Papers are generally paid for after they have been delivered (weekly/monthly).

    Oh wow.. missed that...

Not a chance.... As Shelflife correctly said, noone is gonna pay in advance for a service like that.

as you said there are too many scam artists out there i am genuinley trying to make a living with 2 kids 2 bring up also being out of employment for a year...
I will be asking for payment in advance as not to be made a fool of rather thanpayment after the deliveries...i will be delivering locally as many poeple know who i am to pay for their deliveries up front...
I will be getting my newspapers from a reputable company who i am not naming..
also for a 7 day bill is roughly 9.50 or a 6day bill is roughly 7.20 depending on what papers you buy

Gavt i dont doubt your honesty, but i dont think that most people would pay upfront to a stranger.

i would also be careful as to where you get your papers, as i would imagine that the local newsagents wouldnt be happy with you taking their business away from them.

but there is no one delivering newspapers door to door around Dublin 15 and wouldnt alot of people like to have theier newspapers delivered to their door daily without the hassle of people knocking on their doors everyday also i would be getting my papers from the main newspaper distibutors in Dublin.
also i would not have the money to buy in bulk in order to sell i have already made out my leaflets to deliver them and if any questions poeple may have i would be more than happy to answer them

I like your prices and it's a service I'd consider using. Well if you can get to me early, so I can have a read before going to work.
Delivering a newspaper at 10am when I won't see it until I get back from work is useless to me. Will you be doing your deliveries early? And I mean crack of dawn on cold, dark winter mornings

The others have a good point but if showed up on my doorstep looking for payment in advance you'd get nothing. Not if I didn't know you

oh i would most definitley be starting my day at the crack of dawn thats the whole point of doing this..this means i will most prob be working 12 hour days if thats what it takes to feed my children and make an honest income...
if you read my last post if will have to take payment in advance in order to sell the papers as i would not have 2 shillings to rub together to buy in bulk in order to sell...
also i am abit afraid of being had by poeple who dont have an inkling of paying for their papers if you get me...
i look forward to your reply

    thanks

Im not sure this is a runner, and I buy a paper every day. (Guardian)

Some people do not get a paper every day.

Most people would buy one on the way to work or get it while they are buying fags etc.

the whole point is for me to deliver the papers before they go to work so they dont have to run into a shop and waste time as their papers would be at their doorstep befoer they would have even woken up...

I don't think there'd be a market for this. It's been a long time since i've seen a 'paperboy' doing deliveries.

People tend to buy newspapers in their lunch hour or on the way home. They can get the metro for free on their journey to work in the morning, or read news on their phones.

I'd imagine you'd have to deliver a ridiculous number of papers to make much more than minimum wage tbh.
