it was pretty clear what you were saying, then you back tracked when you were called up on it. could you not just accept that you were wrong and use other arguments to back up your opinion? claiming irish is useless as it is bastardised, whilst at the same time ignoring the fact that all languages are like that. and irony of ironies the one we are all typing in is the most bastardised of the lot

Not denying that. The Irish language only serves a strong symbolic purpose today. That's all. So why resuscitate the language with an English mouth, so to speak? Putting Irish in my address is not going to see an increase in its use, as Councillors Tom Brabazon and Críona Ní Dhálaigh seem to believe. The fact that developers are obliged to do this just makes it worse.. a little over-zealous don't you think?

can we fix the signs we have already first please!!!!

start with the messed up road signs.

or ban stupid estate names - use the original area name if possible (even if irish but this should need no translation if still used everyday)

I also assume the Irish will be placed above the English name even though English is our 1st language for everyday use and the most widely spoken and understood language here.

No you can post in Irish, just use the Irish language forum.

Not much point posting in Irish elsewhere given most people wouldn't be able to understand what you said.

I realise that this is going to come as a shock to you thebman, but Irish speakers have interests outside the Irish language itself.

I sent on a pm to the owners or moderators of this site about editing posts and they have not gotten back to me??? OF COURSE our last Taoiseach is not responsible for the naming of residential developments over the last ten years. It is up to US ALL to contact councils and councillors asking them to to try to make a difference in relation to the naming of residential developments. And although we should have comhstádas for Irish on new road signage in reality few in the media will publicly agree with it and as seen as a lot of people base their opinions too much on the opinions of people working in the media it will never happen. MAYBE in twenty years? Anyway all our new street signage has to have equal prominence for both Irish and English now. I read that one Irish Language body is in favour of "improved" road signage as regards the Irish language now. So a few hundred more equal status road signage should make us all happy. Bar the twenty per cent of people according to polls who do not have affection seemingly for the language.

I am sorry for my last post and that it has not been edited....
