    Hi Guys

I've been using Linux for years and now want to delve a little deeper and maybe help out a little with testing.

With Mint as an example, where is development centered around (URL)?

It depends. System level stuff is all C as far as I am aware.
GTK and QT are libraries used for gui stuff, but GTK is C while QT
is mainly C++. PyQT and the like allow python bindings which is nice.

Usually, submitting bug reports is probably the way to go if you
don't want to deal with coding. Documentation and testing are very
important to any software project - open or commercial.

Yeah I think Mint has a few custom apps but not that many.

Maybe I'll give Linux From Scratch a go and figure out how a distro is done over Christmas

cable, i get it, good man, you like linux mint.

now please, almost every one of your posts since you joined less than six months ago says the same thing- linux mint is great. fine, i heard you the first time. i've just had to wade through pages of your "linux mint is great" posts and not only is it tedious, but also very annoying, if not bordering slightly on spamming and postcount bumping.

ps. here's hoping linux mint 8 sorts out the battery life problems you had with linux mint 7, but thats really not the best way to convince a laptop user to use mint. fairness- "linux mint is great... but my battery life is crap compared to what it was in windows".

if i had any interest in linux or any of its many flavors, i'd be using them now, but i dont like mint, i like vanilla, plain and simple.

    /rant

Thank you so much so goin threw the last six months of threads and all the support I have given Mint and all the joy its given me.

It is a great system you can't get Viruses or Spyware with Linux.

I have given people Linux that are sick to death with windows and there lives are so much happier now they have using mint and they have told me so and are all still using it and love using it.

    Its Mintastic they say :)

really? no linux viruses then? only 863 as it happens.

    http://www.linuxhaxor.net/?p=1256

you just don't hear so much about them because linux is not in as common use as windows so they don't spread as fast. linux is not an invulnerable system either, but maybe when you actually know what you are talking about you'll realise this. this is a lot of the reason why ordinary consumers are turned off using linux, fanbois like yourself spamming forums with your opinion. it wasn't enough for you to spam the forums though, now you have your own thread. you only have to state your opinion once, not two hundred times, as i said- i heard you the first time.

i'm happy that you find linux works for you, but how about you let other users get a word in edgeways? ;)

Mint/Ubuntu never has the latest version of Firefox, for a start. You deinstall it and install the official Mozilla one (to keep up to date) then the os flips out and will eventually try and install it's own one again. There's some vulnerabilities right there. Think they let you properly deselect a package now in Mint 8 though.

Linux Mint Is a great system and its very user friendly and people like using it and are very very happy using it.

Is there something wrong with saying something is good for once instead of complain about something over and over again.

    Nuff Said

    Just Mint It :) xsiborg

I know you really love Linux MInt come on just say it.

compared too windows since I myself and many many other have had not one problem since all of us installed Linux Mint.

What more can you want from a Os.

    No.

Is there something wrong with saying something is good over and over and over and over again? Yes.

Im glad you like Linux Mint so much, however it ain't perfect - no OS is. And its not the solution to everyones problems. I dont think its helps anyone to just say "Mint is great" to every problem you hear about.

In the past you have responded to peoples problems about Windows XP by saying "get mint, its amazing." What I am saying is that this isnt what people want to hear and that Linux Mint isnt for everyone.

For what its worth I too went through a small phase of believing Linux could rule the world. Then I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10, and started to realize that - shock horror - its wasn't perfect. And I still cant connect some peripheral devices properly. It isnt for everyone, especially those who rely on Camcorders or Mp3 players.

Im not saying you shouldt promote Linux Mint - you definitely should! Im just saying that repeating "Mint is amazing" over and over again probably does more bad than good.

    Just my 2 cents.

its just as effective if not more but due to MS and APPLE skull****ing game/software devs. Linux and Unix dont get a fair shot at becoming mainstream

I have to say I wish Linux was more main stream.

I remember when them small laptops were coming out first and all people were saying oh linux runs on them and comes with linux when you buy them.

I thought cool its about time ms got some completion but it didnt happen at all.

Getting stephen Fry on board was a great idea and he talks the talk.

About two years ago, I was teaching an operating system course at an institute of technology. There was some flexibility with the practical element of the course, so I of course chose Linux. To practice what I preached, I wiped my laptop and installed Linux. I did all course notes, slides, web stuff and correction of work/assignments in the various pieces of software in Linux.

No problems - reading Word/Excel/Powerpoint and other files I didn't encounter any issues.

Updated to Ubuntu 9.10 a while back and even my wife remarked how fast/stable the laptop was (it's a 4-year old Pentium-M with 512Mb RAM).

    So far, so good.

However, as I was moving abroad recently, I installed Skype on Linux, tried to set it up with the webcam/microphone and to cut a long story short, gave up in frustration and re-installed Windows.

There's a summary of your problem right there. For general, day-to-day stuff, Linux is fine. For anything a little bit more technical, if it frustrates an experienced user, imagine what it does for a non-techie.

Linux has arrived. But it's not quite here yet.

Installed Linux mint recently due to the whole hoopla of having all the codecs. Fired up an avi and it didn't work. While I'd have the knowledge of how to get it working I installed it so I wouldn't have to. Not so "mint" after all. Other then that I found it ok. It's not better then Windows 7 though. Running wine for games works but it's just not 100% the same so I'll stick with windows 7 for gaming and ubuntu for browsing/emailing. There was nothing that made me want to switch to Linux mint over ubuntu.

Skype has a history of issues with 64 bit support, ALSA, PulseAudio, and non-YUV webcams. In FOSS projects, these kinds of problems tend to be quickly patched but Skype is closed source proprietary code and users are totally dependent on Skype for fixes (unless they can be worked around externally as in skype_dsp_hijacker and the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so trick).

It is unfortunate that Linux is taking the rap for problems in proprietary code, problems the community would fix if given an opportunity.

Once you have the codecs setup, Ubuntu feels like it's put together better for me. I'll probably go back to using Ubuntu next time round.

That and lack of drivers for devices where manufacturer doesn't release specs

And of course the non-free codecs. When you BUY an OS part of the cost goes to the license holders, in the same way there is a royalty on decoder chips in DVD players and in Digital Satellite and Terrestial TV Set top boxes.

Distro's like Ubuntu can't ship these without licenses, you have to get them your self.

In fact Linux Mint by including non-free codecs is illegal in many countries , probably here too.

I have a dual boot winxp and linux mint, installed a few months or so ago. Then I got a grapics card installed, and ever since then linux mint won't boot, it just goes to a black screen and nothing happens. I then restart and you don't want to miss the grub loader or you have to restart again, linux is first in the list ye see. I'm sick of googling and the LM forums don't help much explaing what to do. My experience with it was good until all that crap started.

windows is better at falling back to safemode graphics, but it can get just as snotty over incorrect video drivers too

use the menu to boot to command prompt recovery console whater they call it

    cd /etc/X11
    cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.old
    rm xorg.conf
    reboot

I have no bother with winxp that I couldn't sort myself. The problem is I have 2 hdds for each os, and winxp can't read the linux one, even got that IFS utility installed but doesn't help. :)

This is becuase Microsoft don't want you to be able to read non Microsoft
partitions without jumping through hoops. We don't want Windows users
realising the advantages over standard FAT/NTFS partitions now do we?

Betcha Linux can read the Windows partitions no bother:)
You can even write to ntfs drives using the ntfs-3g driver in Linux.
On the X issue, do the following in the console as root:
    Xorg -configure; cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf; /etc/init.d/gdm restart

I can't access the linux console to do that though. Once I select 'mint' from the grub loader it goes to a blank (black) screen. I then restart the pc and start windows . I've tried repairing mint but no joy, all I have at the grub loader is the command line for startup parameters. :)

I wouldn't put it past m$ for disabling access to /ext drives.

    www.fs-driver.org ext3 driver for windows

try pressing Esc when mint is starting to get the menu, it's in ubuntu, no reason to remove it for a home user

    1. Boot the computer
    2. When grub comes up, press any key to bring up boot options
    3. Select mint and press 'e' to edit params
    4. Add the param 'single' to the line that starts with kernel
    5. Press 'b' to boot
    6. You are now in single user mode
    7. cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.borked
    8. rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    9. sync;sync;reboot
